Scrub dresses...what are they for?

At our orientation the other day, they said that women must wear white stockings or tights under our scrub pants to clinicals (no knee highs allowed) in case that we need to change into a scrub dress. Why would we ever have to change into a dress?? I really HATE tights and have no desire to be running around in a dress.

If anyone knows what this is for, please let me know cause I really can't figure it out.

Interesting. Sorry I can't help you with any information.

I have a hard enough time keeping my knee highs up during our 12 hour clinical, I couldn't imagine having to deal with stockings/tights.

Best wishes!!

What in the world? I mean, unless you suddenly had a clinical assignment that zapped you back to 1982, then honestly I can't see how you would ever be confronted with a situation requiring a scrub dress. And no way could I wear tights under my scrub pants... way too hot!

What about the men, are they required to wear extra underwear in order to be prepared for these so-called scrub dresses?

It may simply be that the hospital only carries "extra" scrub dresses (not pants) for staff who gets soiled at work and needs something to change into. They don't want bare thighs or what has been referred to delicately as "perineal fallout" that might contaminate a sterile/clean area.

Back in the Dark Ages when I was a new grad, we were not allowed to wear our own scrubs from home in our NICU. The hospital provided the scrubs and they were all dresses. We had to wear white stockings. Later, when pants became an option, many people continued to wear the stockings rather than knee-highs because they liked the support provided by support hose. The support hose really helped our legs and feet.

Can you keep a pair or two in your locker -- just in case you need them?

Ehope: Nassau says that every year. You're not going to end up wearing a scrub dress anywhere these days. When you go to the OR to observe in 105, they make you change into paper scrub pants and a top. The professors do expect you to wear white hose anyway, though, so make sure you do.

Do men have to wear white hose as well?

Wow, that seems so oldfashioned!

Thanks everyone for answering such a silly question. I guess I'll wear the stupid tights just in case. Also, maybe the support hose will be better than regular ones so I'll give them a try.

Alli, it's good to know that maybe I won't ever have to actually wear that dress...

And oh yeah, the guys don't have to wear anything special.

Nassau's uniform is as follows:

Girls: Dove Uniforms top & bottoms (pants or skirt), nude/white undergarments, white hose, white nursing shoes, name tag and school ID

Guys: Dove Uniforms top & pants, white socks, nude/white undergarments, white nursing shoes, name tag and school ID

PS: I wore white full length hose in first semester, and hated it. Now I wear white knee-high hose even though we're not exactly supposed to, and it works out fine. It's not like anyone's checking! Just don't wear socks.

Thank the Lord for the U of M! We get to wear ceil blue scrub tops and bottoms and if we are not in the hospital... it's just nice khaki pants, top and a lab coat.

Hopefully you'll never have to do the scrub dress thing. Although, it might be quite pretty on a male student... (only kidding, please don't flame me) :D

Of all the things to be picky about, I can't imagine why a school would care if you are/aren't wearing stockings under your scrubs. I would hate that. How uncomfortable!

Well, it's only for a couple years, and then you can wear whatever you want. :D
