Academic Programs

Undergraduate

Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing — BSN

Upon successful completion of the four-year baccalaureate program in nursing, graduates are then eligible to sit for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure exam (NCLEX) then become eligible for state licensure as an RN.

RN to BSN Gateway

This four semester, 16 month program, is a 100% online program that begins in August and January of each year. The program is for Registered Nurses.

Graduate

Master of Science in Nursing — MSN

The Nurse Practitioner concentration has two specialty track options:

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Adult Gerontology — AGACNP

This track consists of a six-semester program which gives the students the option to keep working full- or part-time and can be completed over a period of 24 months. The variety of course formats include online, hybrid, and face-to-face.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Lifespan

The FNP Concentration program is a six-semester program allowing students to continue working full- or part-time.

Admission FNP/AGACNP (not all inclusive)

  • BSN accredited by the NLN or CCNE
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • RN experience and licensure
  • Minimum 1-year acute/critical care experience for the ACNP-AG specialty
  • Minimum 1-year direct patient care experience for the FNP specialty
  • GRE or MAT scores within the last five years
  • The GRE or MAT requirement is waived for applicants with a 3.4 or higher nursing GPA or for post master's certificate applicants

MSN in Nurse Anesthesia

NOTE: The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) requires that all students matriculating into a nurse anesthesia educational program on January 1, 2022 or thereafter be enrolled in a program approved by the COA to award a practice doctoral degree.  Pending approval by the COA, the program plans to enroll its first doctoral cohort of students in January 2021.

The MSN in Nurse Anesthesia is a 27-month program that requires full-time study. At the end of the program the graduate will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination offered by the National Board of Certification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

Admission (not all inclusive)

  • BSN from an accredited program by the NLN or the CCNE
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • At least two years of critical care experience within the last five years
  • Official GRE or Mailler Analogy Test (MAT) scores; post master's applicants are not required to submit GRE or MAT scores

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The DNP program is designed for the post master's student and consists of a minimum of 36 semester credits. Students develop and implement an evidence-based innovative translational project and are required to complete additional clinical requirements to meet the mandated minimum of 1,000 Post-baccalaureate hours of specialty training. Post-masters students are allowed to apply a maximum of 500 of their post baccalaureate clinical hours to the 1,000 minimum mandate.

The Nursing Administration (BSN or higher to DNP) curriculum includes a full-time or part-time option and students must take a minimum of 57 credits to achieve the DNP. Students 1,000 clinical hours then a clinical residency that involves a Translational Project.

The DNP Nursing Administration Systems assists students to continue on and complete the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).

Post Masters Certificate in Academic Nursing Education

This certificate program takes three semesters to complete and is held mostly online. After completing all five courses successfully, a certificate in Academic Nursing Education will be awarded.

Accreditation

The UTC BSN, MSN, Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, and post-graduate APRN certificates are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accredited the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

The MSN Nurse Anesthesia concentration is fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).
