LVN to RN - 30 Unit Option
Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN)
The Associate of Science in Nursing degree is an associate's degree program that requires general education courses followed by nursing courses. After completing the nursing courses and all required general education courses, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to RN
The Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ADN) LVN to RN step-up program curriculum is designed for the LVN to become associate degree prepared, entry-level Registered Nurses. After completion, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.
LVN to RN Thirty-Unit Option - Licensure Only (No paper award given)
The LVN to RN Thirty Unit Option program prepares the LVN as entry-level Registered Nurses (RN).
After completing the program requirements, graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed as an RN.
The LVN Thirty Unit Option as a method to satisfy the requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse, may not be recognized in another state.
Students who complete this option will take NCLEX-RN as a non-graduate thereby not receiving a degree. This status will not change even if student goes on to obtain a degree. There is no restriction to practice within California but there is in other States. The student may have difficulty transferring to another state or territory without a degree. The student may also have difficulty applying to a college or university for an advanced degree.
Admission Requirements (not all inclusive)

- Allied Health license or certificate
- Immunizations or evidence of positive titers as outlined by the college
- Prerequisites minimum grade of C or better
- Combined grade point average of 2.5 or higher
All students having met the basic entrance requirements are eligible for admission. SDCC admits one class per year in the Fall semester. The Nursing program accepts a class of 50-60 first year students each fall semester for the generic RN program and 8-12 students for the LVN-RN/ LVN 30-unit option program.
If accepted to the nursing program, students will be encouraged to enroll in and pass the Nursing Student Success course, NRSE 092. LVN-RN students will be required to enroll in and successfully complete NRSE 235 - LVN-RN Transition.
Clinical Practice Requirements (not all inclusive)
Students accepted into this program will be required to successfully complete clinically-based courses held in health care facilities. These facilities require immunizations, background checks and urine drug screening as a condition of placement.
Refusal of immunizations, refusal to submit to a background check, and/or failure to meet clearance criteria established by the healthcare facility may prevent placement in the clinical setting.
