Schools in Sacramento

Published

Hi all -

I am relocating from Virginia to Cali in August, and I was wondering what good schools are in the area? I am finishing up my pre-reqs still, and I am curious what's available out there.

Any info would be great!!

Thanks to everyone!

Tami

Welcome to Cali! Are you going to take pre nursing classes or nursing classes? Are you looking for community college, university, private school? There are quite a few schools in the area and it depends what you're looking for. Just realize that when you do apply for nursing, it's EXTREMELY competitive. One of the local schools gets ~ 900 apps/semester.

Thanks for the welcome! Being on the west coast will be quite a change for me. I've lived in Florida for 26 years and moved around on the East Coast mostly (except when I lived in Hawaii for 3 years)

I am currently at George Mason University - it has the largest nursing program in the state of Virgina....I am about 2 semesters away from being finished with my pre-reqs.

I don't care how I get it right now. I am almost 34 years old and I just want my RN right now. I plan on going all the way to MSN... but it would be nice just to get into the program.

I am a former EMT, and I currently work for a doctor right now, assisting with injections and using the xray on the patients. I have a lot of medical background experience to guide me through. I've even done some phlebotomy work.

I am hoping my previous experiences, and my GPA will help me a little bit. I am at a 3.74 right now, overall. I still need A&P but that's about it... I need to figure out what pre-reqs will be required in Cali. I've already taken Advanced Comp (ENGL 302 here), and BioMedical Ethics... (fun) I took Micro a long time ago, and taking Statisics this summer.

Sounds like you have a lot of experience in the medical field and a great GPA so that will help.

Here are some junior colleges: (these are all lottery based for nursing)

Sacramento City College: http://wserver.scc.losrios.edu/~nursing/

Sierra College, Roseville: http://www.sierracollege.edu/programs/divisions/SciMath/nursing/index.html

American River College, Sac: http://wserver.arc.losrios.edu/~edhealth/nursing.html

Samuel Merritt, Private college. They have a campus in Sac that has Masters Programs and ASBN:

4-year college: (based on merit)

Sacramento State University: http://www.hhs.csus.edu/NRS/

Within commuting to Sac:

Yuba College, Yuba City: http://www.yccd.edu/nursing/ (wait list)

Los Medanos, Pittsburg: http://www.losmedanos.edu/nursing/rn.asp (lottery) - probably 1-1/2 hours away. They only accept applicants once a year, but they generally get less of them (about 400 ~ which is still a lot)

Solano Community College: http://www.solano.edu/degrees/Catalog_200304/Registered%20Nursing.htm (wait list)

All the ones listed above have nursing programs. Folsom Lake College (maybe 30 mins away) offers prereq classes but doesn't have a nursing program. Here's their website: http://www.flc.losrios.edu/. Also Cosumnes River College offers prerequisite classes. Cosumnes, American River, Sac City College & Folsom are all under the umbrella of the Los Rios college system so if you take prereq courses at one of their campuses you don't have to worry about getting transcripts if you apply at another one of their colleges, which is convenient.

Most of the colleges have a recency requirement for your science classes, generally 7 years. So if you've taken micro before and it's been longer than that you'll probably have to retake it.

It's a good thing you're doing your research now since the schools can have different requirements. Good luck!!!
