I posted this in another forum, but hope to get answers here as well.
We had a big exam yesterday in microbiology. Our instructor was back and forth from our room to the next setting up for lab, and 2 girls noticed at least 3 people cheating. I was told someone was cheating off of me. Another girl and I went to the instructor stating we didn't know for sure because we didn't witness it, but heard that we were cheated off of. He is now notifying the school. What kind of steps do they take to investigate this??

At my school you can report it annonymously or in person and it will be investigated. If they are caught, they are terminated from the course and or program. I agree with this policy and there should be no going back and implemented equally to everyone.
The steps is witnesses, and also they put them on the "black list" and it is forwarded to all the instructors (basically to keep an eye on them), if they are notorious for it...they usually do it again but this time with plenty of witnesses.
I am for a zero tolerance for cheating school :)

Every school has its own policy -- your student handbook should explain in detail what the policy is, and what steps are taken in the investigation.

Look at your syllabus, and/or school website for the "Academic Honesty" as my school calls it.
I'm sure it is different at every school, but for mine it is the instructors decision first of all, then I'm sure if it is bad enough it is handled by the Dean, etc.
They could get kicked out of the class, or kicked out of the school all together.
I CAN'T STAND cheating!!! I make sure I keep my answers covered, fold my paper in half, what ever I have to do to keep "wondering eyes" off!
(Think they will be able to cheat when they (IF THEY) ever become a nurse? What are these people thinking...."I'm sorry, I cheated on my CPR exam...you have to wait until I look up the procedure!"
grrrrr :angryfire
Oh trust me, I am ticked too! I got the highest score in the class, and to think someone cheated off me really burns me up. I studied my butt off for that grade. It was on a scantron sheet, and I was saying they have to be pretty talented to figure those out! We'll see what happens he was going to report it to the higher-ups yesterday.
