Schools that DO accept WGU credits/transfers

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

In an effort to make this process less time-consuming for those who come after me, I am starting this thread to consolidate the info I have found and will continue to find regarding what schools accept degrees/credits/transfers.

-University of Texas, Arlington (according to a post by Kristy78 in 2011, for a DNP program.)

-George Washington University (I personally got an email from them. They said they do but of course it depends on the individual admission. They have NP programs.)

That's all I've got so far after several hours of research. I will update when I get any new info. Please feel free to add your school if you went to WGU and then continued at another school using your WGU degree.

I'm a grad attending the MSN/FNP program at University of Memphis.

I was also accepted to the MSN/FNP program at Maryville University in St. Louis, MO, but preferred to go to a school with local name recognition.

Hi Everyone,

You are all true life savers. I have been doing some research on schools that would accept BSN graduates because I too want to go to school to become a Nurse Practitioner, and I have not had any luck. I will also do more research myself, and hopefully I will find more schools as well.

Are there many schools not accepting your degree? I am considering WGU for MSN-leadership track. I got my BSN years ago. Would you caution against it?

It's less a matter of not accepting and more not having a competitive GPA.

That's exactly what it's about! is fully accredited (both regionally and nursing-wise). The issue is if you're applying for a program that requires more than a 3.0, then you're out of luck. All WGU transfer credits are equal to a 3.0GPA at a traditional school. Then again, every program I've looked at did not require that (even thought I did not go to WGU); of course, I'm not trying to go to Harvard! LOL

I applied to an BSN-DNP program at Rush University, and was accepted. Rush requires applicants apply via NursingCAS, my MSN classes were not included in my GPA, NursingCAS calculated them as pass or fail. The only GPA calculation I had was for my undergrad classes. Rush is allowing me to transfer 2 of the classes I completed at WGU.

I contacted Brigham Young University (BYU) and Westminster FNP admissions office regarding this matter Here is my email followed by their responses:

Hi

I am a working RN and I am trying to decide which RN-BSN program I should complete. My long term goal is to graduate from your FNP program. does not give a GPA score to their graduates. Does Westminster's FNP program accept BSN nurses into their program or would I be better off finishing my BSN through Jacksonville University?

Thank you for your time,

They both responded with basically the same response:

Hi M***,

These are good questions. We do take WGU BSN degree, however, it will translate as a 3.0 GPA which is the minimum requirement. It may hurt your chances of getting accepted into our program. If you are heavily invested in that program, I would stay with WGU. You will need to compensate by being an extremely strong candidate in other aspects of your application. Does that help? What else can I do for you?

and BYU's response:

Dear M****,

Thank you for your interest in our FNP Program. We do accept Western Governors University , however we prefer other programs because they do list a student’s GPA, whereas WGU only lists pass or fail. It would be entirely up to you to decide if you would like to apply.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

I don't know why this keeps coming up. Bottom line: if you plan on going to an FNP program that requires at least a 3.0 GPA, then you might not want to go to . Obviously, the FNP program will give priority to those students with a higher GPA and your 3.0 might not cut it. Or, pick an FNP program where you will most likely be accepted. Believe me, there are a TON of FNP programs out there who would love a student with a 3.0.

I've changed my mind many times and have so far been accepted to 3 programs! Which is all of them that I applied to (and I went to Chamberlain, which is owned by DeVry-a for profit corporation). :-)

On the list of Universities that accept .edu credits,

what does the asterisk mean?

usually it is some fine print, right?

Any thoughts on Arizona, do they accept students into their MSN to DNP program.

Last year I had been accepted into the MSN-nursing education program at Eastern New Mexico University after having earned an BSN degree at . The credits earned at WGU were accepted without any negative issues.

I'm starting my MSN leadership track at in February. After I complete that looking to go into an FNP certificate or DNP program. Anyone lately been accepted to any programs after obtaining their MSN? I want to start making a list for myself and would like a more current list than the one posted on this thread several years ago.
