I guess you could say I am already day dreaming  about summer because our weather was so nice today, but I am wondering what other school nurses do with their summer? This will be my first summer as a school nurse and I am trying to plan whether or not I should pick up a summer job or just relax and enjoy my time off. What has worked best for you? :)

I used to find work every summer, but got over that real quick !! :chuckle I get paid throught the entire year, so it's not like I don't have pay checks coming in. It's wonderful ! When my kids were still at home, we planned day trips, slept in late and really enjoyed the bonding time. We lived life at a slower pace. I feel so blessed to have this job. My advice is take those 2 months off and get some work done around the house, spend time with your family and be good to yourself

You will be sooooo ready to come back to work in August !

ENJOY :balloons:

:o i have a 12 month contract..we run a 6 week summer program for our students (special needs) it is a different pace, but i usually have more students as we get several just for the summer, in addition to our regulars.

sigh..we also have an outdoor camp on a pond..i may volunteer to work there this summer instead of my school...we'll see what staffing looks like.

I have a lot of nursing experience, so can easily get prn work. I work in ob a day or 2/ week in the summer. I also get paid year round, but like the extra cash for trips, etc. We hope to go out of country next year. But it is a nice idea to sit back and totally enjoy your summer. The first year I worked in school nursing, I took the summer off.

summer's off?? what is that? is that like when you don't go to school in the summer? hmmmm....interesting concept. anyway I will be in OB and Peds this summer. One day I will be done with school.

I worked some private duty nursing my first summer but since then I just relax and enjoy the time off. If you can afford to, I would advise the same. It is a perk of being a school nurse. My kids love having me home and I get recharged for September.

Other than read the stack of good books piling up, I always attend the National Association of School Nurse Conference. This year it is:

June 30 - July 3, 2005

Pre-conference: June 29, 2005

"Building Tomorrow Today: Promoting the Legacy"

Washington DC (my favorite site)

http://www.nasn.org/conference/conference.htm

It includes a training / coaching session followed by a march to the hill to meet with congresspersons and senators for you state and local area.

I'm going to be a nurse at an all-girls summer camp. Me and my girls look forward to the trip. I always try to pick a new location, so on my days off I can take the girls and explore the area. It doesn't pay that well, but the adventure and change of scenery is worth it.
