Corrupt Teachers

How do you handle corrupt teachers that are the norm? I have seen teachers repeatedly treat certain ethnic students a certain way in my office when they thought he/she was ignoring a teacher when spoked to in the hallway enroute to the nurse with a pass. Then a big confrontation happens dead center in the clinic and interrupts all activity. There's this charade of pointing out to the student what he did, how he did it, his downward road to alternative school, etc. This ethnic group is a small percent of the whole population and it's obvious they're unwanted at this school. This kid today didn't speak up loud enough to say he had a pass, but showed it to the teacher but was still given a detention in the middle of my desk because "he didn't show respect to her". The two teachers continued shouting at him even after I mentioned he'd come in for a migraine headache. But then you have other kids come in mocking the teachers on the way in and they look the other way. It took a lot for me to keep my mouth closed and say nothing. How do you deal with this? I know it won't go away, but how do you say something but stay out of it too?

What ethnic group are you talking about, and what age was this student?

African American Junior High student 12 yrs. old.

Hi Glo,

I have not encountered this particular problem, but I have witnessed many a teacher who has come in my clinic acting like the whole world relvolves around them. Some have shown no respect for me nor the students who are in my care. I do not know what is going on here lately, but the blatant disrespect is across the board in my school. Seems to be growing worse each year. I guess some would say that it is just how it is in our country now a days, but really.....it's about as bad as I have ever seen.

What scares me is that these teachers are the ones who shape and help develop each of our children.....be scared....very scared.:stone

Yes, I am scared. Their minds are being shaped by the teachers and how they preceive themselves in the world. If they act polite but have a diff skin color and are treated harshly, they may in return act negatively. I could only keep back tears that I saw in his eyes as he shook my hand goodbye. Off to Alternative School for 60 days for talking too quietly. I guess this is the same as working in the hospitals. Trying to keep yourself from getting involved emotionally. But it hurts to see these middle class kids trying to conform but not being accepted. Well, 12 more weeks of school left. At least I was able to touch his life for a moment. I hate reading about any person being carted off to prison, regardless of their race. I always think, I wonder if he or she could have been a good citizen instead of what they turned out to be. The school is our next generation, it might as well be better than worse. Also I had a teacher demand to use my w/c for 2 weeks for 4-5 trips/day for inj. ankle after I told her I only had one for the whole school. She said, "that's what it's here for and I refuse to rent one". So I quess if it's not all teachers, the corrupt ones outshine the good ones.

Are these certified teachers with college degrees? Are they experiencing mental health problems, other signs of instability? unprofessionalism??

I have never worked with any teachers or administrators who exhibited any discrimination in my presence. I would make an appointment with my supervisor and ask for guidance on how to handle these incidents. I'd be very concerned aobut what is going on in the classroom when no one is present if they are acting this out of line in your presence.

If you have brought it to their attention in the past, I would press the button on the mini recorder or cell phone in my pocket. If not, you should tell them that it makes you feel uncomfortable when they speak to the students in that manner. I don't care who they are, they have no right to treat anyone like that. They are abusing their authority and they need to be stopped before they push a student over the edge, possibly harming themselves or others. Don't let administration cover this up, but that's who you should go to first. Don't give up your original recording either. These teachers need to be suspended and go to some kind of sensitivity training before they are allowed to return to the classroom! If it doesn't stop, I would let the parents hear how their children are being treated!

You're the boss in your clinic. Make them aware of that...strongly if need be.
