School loans....

With the nursing shortage and people wanting nurses to STAY....i'm thinking that if hospitals would agree to pay off school loans for time worked, that would keep a LOT of people in the profession for longer. I mean my DH and i owe 20K between the 2 of us. That SUCKS.........if someone would pay it off for us in exchange for work we'd GLADLY jump on that bandwagon. Maybe we should have that legislated....

I don't know if you're actually looking for loan payback, but here is a link to a payback program.

While I am not sure if the loan payback programs increase loyalty but we have noted in my facility if a new nurse can tolerate the old nurses for 2 years, they stay forever, or until they get married and move far, far away. We have also noticed that with new grads there is an almost universal period of time about 9-14 months in that they feel stupid, incompetent and ready to bail. If they can get past that period, their self confidence starts to improve and they settle in as nurses and make decisions based on something other than their feelings of incompetence. Here we tend to be for anything that keeps new grads here long enough to get through that period.

Thanks for that link! We are looking into it to see if we qualify!!!

We have been looking into hospitals that offer programs such as this, but unfortuantely all we've found so far is mainly continueing education stuff, which is great, but it would be such an incentive if we could knock out some of these loans too.

The area hospitals where I live offer loan forgiveness on top of sign on bonuses AND tuition benefits for continuing education. Not every hospital will offer a sign on bonus, but each hospital offers loan forgiveness and tuition benefits for continuing education. I could't imagine working without paying off my school loans on top of paying for my master's education. It's nice to have some one else pay for it for a change.

has anyone used this program here? i'm just curious......i'm hoping DH will qualify for it!!
