Hey!
I started a brand new case today (yay, it's a good thing. A REALLY good thing.)
It's a school case- for the first time, I WON'T be in the home! I'll be in school with an A&O patient. It's going to be so different.
Does anyone have tips on school cases? Things to avoid? Things to look out for?

Congratulations! I filled in with a grade school student and loved it. Was sorry when my time ended! If you can get a copy if the bell schedule that has when recess, lunch and any special periods such as PE and Art, that would help in planning your students care. I tried to do most of my students med stuff quickly during recess so that she wouldn't miss out on academics. If your student has supplies and meds that the parent sends to school with them- be sure to check backpack every day for them and call parent right away if something is missing. If you are responsible for tolieting/ diaper changes and your student is heavy, be sure to have classroom para professionals/ aids assist you. Check in with the classroom teaches and introduce yourself. Have fun!!

There was a thread at one time about this same topic. There were some good replies.

Don't forget to introduce yourself to the school nurse if there is one!

Be sure to establish parameters for when you report/defer to the school nurse and keep things clear. When we had problems develop, the school nurse implied that they were my problems, but in the beginning she had told me that she was in charge. The mixed messages were a little frustrating.

I spent 2 years on a school case. It was an interesting experience. Definitely introduce yourself to the school nurse and the special educator. Are you supposed to provide instruction, or just nursing care? Be very firm about establishing boundaries.
