I'd suggest contacting the guidance counselor at your high school (if you're a high school student) and the financial aid office at the college you will be attending. All colleges that I know of have a list of scholarships available in the financial aid office.

There are a lot of scholarships that are specific to location, college, program, etc. So the best place to go would be the school you're attending- as they can provide you with the most up to date and applicable scholarships.

Make sure you fill out FAFSA, look at your state's website and see if there are any separate scholarship/financial aid applications there. My school also has its own general financial aid application that has multiple scholarships tied in with that so definitely contact your guidance counselor and develop a good relationship with them.

I remember the guidance counselors back in my community college that just handed me a piece of paper with a bunch of links on it. Not very helpful, but try to go through all of them and see what you can get. If you have a good relationship with them, they can tell you if any new grants or scholarships come up that can be suited for you. =)

Hi all I am in the financial aid search for school that I will be starting in the fall. I am wondering if anyone has any good websites/information as to where to apply for scholarships. Most sites that I've seen seem suspicious so I just was wondering if anyone on here had any advice? Thanks so much for any help!

Check with the various state departments...I don't know where you are, but I was just awarded a full scholarship from them today!

Definitely start with the FAFSA. If you have any local job markets, they may have some good information for you as well. Local hospitals may be offering scholarships, or even tuition assistance programs if you work as a CNA while you are in school. Your senator or congressional offices may have scholarships they offer (although if they are like my local politicians, they may just never respond when you contact them :down: ). Always look at your school's financial aid website, and stop into their office, because they may have a whole list of organizations looking for scholarship recipients just like you. I should say that you are starting your search very late in the game. Most scholarships and grants are considered in the January to March range (some even earlier) for the following year, so if you don't get much for this coming year, you may have better luck the following year.

I agree those sites tend to look shady. I suggest starting locally and work your way from there. And don't get discouraged. I've had a 3.8+ GPA for two years and have yet to receive a scholarship (although I'm waiting for a call back on a huge one right now). There are so many people looking for money that there isn't much to go around.

The best suggestion I can offer is almost every college website has a "scholarships" link with a list of legitimate scholarship offers for your school/area. It is usually on the home page after logging in to the schools system or on the financial page. Many have links for filling out the scholarship application online. Don't be afraid to apply to scholarships that you don't fit all the criteria many times scholarships go un-awarded because no one applies for it because they don't fit all of the specifications.

It is better to apply to many and be passed over than to not apply at all and miss out on an opportunity!

Besides FAFSA, I think you should just go through your intended college. They have staff that will inform you of the popular scholarships in your area. A lot internet sources are just collecting info to sell off. I haven't had any success with online scholarships, besides more junk mail.

I would speak to your fin aid office as they will be able to point you in the right direction. Most states have a higher education commission, so check their website. Also fastweb is a legitimate scholarship website. I will note that most scholarship application deadlines have passed or are getting ready to close. Also you need to fill out a Fafsa to be considered for most scholarships.
