I know this is a rather odd questoin, but, would a new graduate RN (assuming she got the job) be able to request something like Tuesday evenings off? I want to participate in a local orchestra and the rehersals are Tuesday evenings in city about an hour away. I have no problems working weekends/holidays so I'm not a potential scheduling nightmare, I just want an opportunity to pursue an interest.

I think most floors would be more than willing to accomodate that request. I would just make whoever is in charge of scheduling on your floor of your request, and that you are available to work other days/shifts.

I don't think that would be a problem as long as you discussed that with them right up front-especially if you are flexible with other areas of your schedule. I teach music at my daughter's elementary school every Wednesday. It's a really small school and they understand that sometimes my work might have to come first if I have an inservice or class, etc. If I know that I absolutely have something on a Wednesday for work then I work something out with the school to find a substitute.
That's really cool that you want to get involved in an orchestra. What instrument do you play? I play violin and have given lessons in the past. Every year around Christmas I bring 3 of my former students in to the 2 hospitals that I work at and we go floor to floor and play Christmas carols. The patients and staff alike really enjoy it and we love doing it. It's so much fun!
I took up cello and violin six years ago, but both are secondary instruments. My primary is the flute (13 years), but my passion has always been for the strings :loveya:

One night should not be a problem if you tell them up front. It is hard if you need Tuesday off for Orchestra, and Fridays off because no babysitting and Monday night off for bible study. Then you do become a scheduling night mare. Nurses have to have lives and outside interest.

I don't see why not.
You are very reasonable, and not asking crazy things like never working weekends or never working holidays (in hospital settings).
I just can't help by laugh about the latter.
Good luck to you!

Also if you are flexable, Im sure you could find a nurse to do switches. ie, work a friday night for a tuesday night. This is a very easy request you make btw.
