Hi. I am a first year nursing student (mature age). I have been given an essay topic of 800 words based on the scenario. I am trying to workout how will I frame it as I have never written any task based on scenario before.
I would appreciate if anyone can help me assess on how to write an essay based on scenario. I just want some idea or layout of this essay.
Mrs Gulcin Ozdemir
Mrs Gulcin Ozdemir is a 35 year old mother of four children aged 5 years, 4 years, 2 years, and18 months. Gulcin arrived from the Goreme Valley in Turkey with her husband Ergun 7 yearsago, leaving behind her parents, brothers and sisters. Gulcin's uncle sponsored the couple outto Australia; however, he passed away 3 years ago, leaving the Ozdemirs with no family inMelbourne.
The Ozdemirs live in the western suburbs of Melbourne, in a rented 3 bedroom, single storeyhouse with a small garden Ergun drives a truck for a living - he has always driven haulagetrucks. Before the children came along, Gulcin would climb into the front seat of the cab and goon some of the country and interstate trips with her husband.
Gulcin takes pride in running her home and looking after the children. She enjoys cooking -particularly the traditional recipes from her homeland. She brings in a small income frommaking lampshades, which she does on a small machine in the sitting room at home. Gulcinmisses her parents, brothers and sisters and hopes to one day have saved enough money to beable to visit her family in Turkey.
Gulcin does not have a car license and finds it a struggle to use the local transport network toget around. She loves to shop and tries to go out almost every day to get fresh produce for hercooking, taking her three youngest children with her. Gulcin finds it tiring to get about thesedays.
Six years ago Gulcin was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by her general practitioner(GP), Simon Cross. She had been feeling exhausted and drained of energy and after a number oftests was informed by him that she had diabetes.
Some days Gulcin feels unwell, weak and tired; other days she can feel better. She feels hermain problem is her tiredness, sometimes feeling "under the weather". She is also worried byher "waterworks" as she calls them, having recently experienced some urinary incontinence. She doesn't say anything to her GP; as she feels embarrassed and awkward about such privateand personal matters.
Exercise is difficult for Gulcin, particularly on hot days when she can feel particularly weak. Sheis afraid she will have more "waterworks accidents", as her incontinence worsens when shemoves about. So she now tends to stay at home more, gluing her lampshades and savingmoney for her trip back to Turkey. Recently Gulcin's weight has started to increase, making herfeel even more uncomfortable and tired.
Gulcin doesn't speak much English - just enough to get by at the shops. She is finding life quitelonely. She holds on to her dream of seeing her family in Turkey again. "The tablets they aregiving me will cure me soon", she says as she smiles.

I think you've identified what she mentions as her main concerns. Let us know what you come up with! Great assignment.
Thanks for the encouragement!! :)..
Type 2 Diabetes can lead to frequent urge of urine as body make no or very little insulin. This could further lead to tiredness and may result in weight gain (Healthinsite, 2012). Mrs. Ozdemir feels her main problem is her tiredness and she is also experiencing urge of urine more often. Educating Mrs. Ozdemir regarding her illness may help her understand her body. (interpreter, social activities involving/ gathering, encouragement in related to car license, providing alternate female GP contacts might make her little comfortable to discuss her private issues, proving information about healthy diet and weight management)
Do I work around these topics?? and build up my essay based on these issues she is facing?

Focus on her diet and culture that surrounds her how does that effect her food choices.....how will the language barrier effect her health maintenance compliance.....with meds diet and exercise.
Thank you!
I am still working on this. I have prepare a kind draft for this. As the essay should contain 800 words limits; 100 for introduction, 200 for body1 (barriers: language, no social life and no car license), 200 for body2 (diagnose and leading to other health problems) ; 200 for body3 (advice as a nurse: educating her about her illness, and providing her with social support she can access in her community) and 100 for conclusion.
I m on right track?
Yes:)
Thank you!! 50% of my research is done. Feels much more confident. Just trying to understand how will I connect the evidence and nursing opinion with patient situation. Any idea??
The way you do that is to have your assessment data on the patient and see how it relates to the evidence and opinions. If you don't see a connection, then you either have picked the wrong nursing research/evidence or you don't have enough data, or both. This is an exercise in how to think about situations and data. Think about it that way as much as, or more than, thinking about the structure of your written work. Once you have the thinking part clear in your head, the rest will be much easier. :)
Sure :). Thank you. Doing lots of reading to understand.
Thank for the ideas and support.

I would also say she has had three children so she may benefit from keigel exercises. I don't think this is too complicated...just put yourself in her shoes and see what you would do....(exercises, teaching about healthy eating habits, not consuming so much carbs/ sugars, monitoring blood glucose at home, teaching her importance of adherence to insulin regimen...etc) Sorry if I am reading this wrong but these are issues that first came to mind. It is easy for people to feel isolated when they have no means to get around so she could even begin to have some secondary depression....
