Scared to talk to Doctors

I am a nursing student and I have a huge fear of talking to the Doc's. I am sure that I am not the only person with this fear, but how do you get past it? I would love it if someone could give me their input on the matter.

It gets easier with time and experience. As others have mentioned, be precise and to the point, and have all relevant information ready in case the doctor has a question.

No way! I do not fear the doctors I work with at all. Most of them are residents that I thought how to do simple procedures like inserting foley. There is a mutual respect b/w us.

Relax, take a deep breath and speak to them professionally. They are not semi-gods, they are people just like you and I.

GOOD LUCK!

I have docs in my family, and yep they do use the potty just like the rest of us. Also just like other people - some have great personalities - some don't.

I just moved to the night shift and truly, one of the things I will miss most about days is making rounds with the docs when they see my patients. Going in the room when the doc does always makes me feel informed of the game plan, learn new things, and helped me be the liaison between pt. and doc. Even as a student, I went in with the docs. You can just hang back and be a fly against the wall if you want. Some docs really enjoy teaching - I hope you run across some like that very soon. A nurse is part of the team - communication is the key.

Good luck. :nurse:

Ex: Hello Dr. X, I'm calling you in regards to patient X in room 437A. I am calling to let you know that there is a moderate level of blood drianage draining through the heel of his cast, which also extends upwards to about middle calve area.

Doc: OK that's fine, don't worry about it.

Me: Ok, thanks, bye.

THen I document the phone call.

it's very easy!! Just call the doctor, tell him the patient, and the problem. then he'll tell you want he wants to do (new orders). have the chart with you and a list of medication and IVF just to be on the safe side.

Great advice already given. I also keep in mind that they are just smart regular people. know this sounds weird but when my boss was caught cheating on his wife, it really hit me that he's really just a regular person and completely got rid of any intimidation I felt around him.

Just be prepared and if they act like jerks then it's their issue and not yours.
