Since we are no longer "hopeful applicants" it makes sense to have new thread for those of us starting classes in August. We can use this as a place to get/share info on the program, express our excitement about finally being bona fide nursing students, or just get to know each other.
A big :ancong!: to everyone who made it in! We all worked so hard to get here. I look forward to meeting all or some of you as we begin what I'm sure will be two very crazy years.
I feel like such a slacker! I haven't got any of my books yet! I'm hoping to do that within the next few weeks or so! And as far as my computer..I have a 13 inch mac that I'm bringing. I hope that will be sufficient, but I don't see why it wont. What are you bringin the first day of class?! :)

Unless you have financial aid restrictions I would suggest getting your books from Amazon. I got all my books brand new for the same price (or less) that Santa Fe charges for used copies. Plus, as someone else already said, you get free 2-day shipping if you register you student email address with them. It's pretty overwhelming. The day my books arrived I had an "oh sh*t, what did I get myself into?" moment. I literally made this face ---> when I flipped through the dosage calculation book. Oh, and the "Nurses Pocket Guide"? Uh, yeah it's like 1100 pages....I'm gonna need a bigger pocket.
As far as the first day goes, I'm just going to bring a planner and a spiral notebook with pockets. First day is orientation so I can't imagine us jumping into our books right away.
I can't believe we start in 2 1/2 weeks! Summer has flown by!
What type of laptop is everyone bringing to class? I can't decide if I want a netbook or a lite-weight notebook. I have a full size laptop but the battery only lasts about 2 hours. I deciding between an ASUS and an hp.
See you guys in 3 wks!!!!

I got an ASUS last month and I LOVE it. I got mine from TigerDirect for an obscenely low price because it's a slightly older model (maybe a year or so). The only color available was a dark chocolate and I actually like it better than black.

Awesome! I was looking at that color and I thought it looked nice. Is your ASUS a netbook or a laptop? The one I was looking at is on amazon and it's called an A53U-XE1 entertainment laptop (a reviewer said the battery lasted 8 hours). I'll check out TigerDirect too.
I'm afraid of getting a netbook because I prejudiced against smaller processors, smaller screen/keyboard, and starter programs.
Kortney- If you're feelin' froggy you can try half.com for books. I got two books from there. One was perfect and one was awful. I was supposed to be buying a 'like new' dosage calculation book for $30.........I got a completely water damaged, used to be 'like new' book. I contacted the seller and told them the book looked like crap, refund me $15 and we have a deal. If you're in my class you'll see my crappy, $15 book........... but it's still usable.

Actually I did look at some of their prices, but I was wondering if they were kind of sketchy! But the prices were pretty reasonable! So I might just look into that though! Thanks!
Gatormommy-
Mine is the ASUS K42F-A2B. It's a 14-inch laptop. The battery lasts a solid 4 hours though I might buy a backup battery just to be safe. The only problem I have with it is the speakers aren't very loud. My boyfriend, who works in IT and builds computer from scratch for fun, found it for me. I am so clueless about processors and interfaces and RAM and whatnot. I just gave him my requirements and told him to email me a link to the one he thought I should buy.
I wanted to double check that the first day is August 22 @ 8:00am in the W Annex building room #104, and we are wearing street clothes? Thanks in advance :)
Yes, I just checked my schedule and you are correct. And yes, I was told Mrs. Knott when I turned in my paper work to just wear street clothes.

IT people are so cool. I was thinking the same thing with my laptop, getting an extra battery. I might try that first..........I really love my laptop, I might add some more RAM for better functioning. If it doesn't work out my choice will be an ASUS.
CK32- I haven't ordered my name tag either, I haven't had time to lug my kids to the bookstore with me. Are we supposed to get patches too? When do clinicals actually start?

This is like, third-hand information so don't quote me on it. My friend who is also starting the program this year told me that her co-worker, who started the program last year, told her that we're going to be in clinicals by the second or third week. The thought of that absolutely terrifies me but I guess there's nothing like jumping in with both feet. I'm thinking we'll have our orientation and week or so to get our uniforms and supplies and then it's full speed ahead for the next five semesters.
Can we get our patches/name tags now? Do we just show them our schedule to prove we're in the NP? Does anyone know how much they cost? I'm trying to get everything before classes start. I already have two sets of scrubs and some really nice nursing shoes and of course my textbooks. I'll probably order my steth, penlights, and bandage scissors sometime next week. I'm still debating on whether to go ahead and buy a rolling bookbag or wait it out and see if I can make do with my messenger bag.

I'm so excited, I've already started our dosage calculations book:) .............or maybe I'm terrified of failing the class.
I'm such a nerd, my office is full of sticky notes, folders, highlighters, index cards, clicky pens, and careplan books.
Does anyone know how big the dry erase board is that we're supposed to buy? I'm wondering if it would be cheaper somewhere else (like everything else on the book list)?
