Santa Fe College ASN Class of 2013

Published

Since we are no longer "hopeful applicants" it makes sense to have new thread for those of us starting classes in August. We can use this as a place to get/share info on the program, express our excitement about finally being bona fide nursing students, or just get to know each other.

A big :ancong!: to everyone who made it in! We all worked so hard to get here. I look forward to meeting all or some of you as we begin what I'm sure will be two very crazy years. :D

Hello!

I'm Rachel and I am excited to start in two weeks!! I am taking the CPR class tomorrow at SFC and I found out you can only register for the class provided at SFC on the phone with a credit card. Students are no longer able to register at school. There are also other places to take the class besides SFC.

I ordered most of the text books online on half.com, which so far I ordered 7 books and the Iclicker and only paid $263. A much better deal than the book store or any used text book store. I bought the patches and sewed them on the left shoulder as instructed and just picked up my name tag at the bookstore. It takes the book store about 3 weeks to get them in and there is a pin or a magnetic one you can choose from. We will not be wearing scrubs to class, but only to labs and clinicals. The name tag was about $9 and the patches are about $2.50 a piece. There will be former students selling used scrubs the first week of class to anyone who can't afford or doesn't want to buy new ones. We do need comfortable white closed toed shoes as well, which I bought mine at Famous Footwear for $45. I hope this helps!!

Hi Rachel, nice to "meet" you! I took the plunge and invested in a pair of Alegria nursing shoes. I get knee and back pain if I'm on my feet too long without proper support. They look a little like clown shoes but they are seriously the most comfortable things I have ever put on my feet. The footbed is made out of cork and memory foan, so they conform to the shape of your feet after you wear them for awhile. I've been wearing them while doing housework to break them in. It's like walking on a cloud.

thanks LittleBirdie! I'm going to check the Alegria shoes out and eventually go ahead and get a pair. I have heard good things about them :)

Hey you guys!!! I ordered my name tag last week. they are $10 at the bookstore and you don't have to show proof of anything! I just went in and signed a paper. The patches are $2.97 also, I went ahead and picked up 3 of theme just so I had enough!!!!

Has anyone heard how the class is going to be split up? Like is it 144 nursing students in one class everyday? That just seems like a lot of people in a classroom to learn very important information! If anyone has an idea please let me know!

So where is everyone ordering their stethescopes and such from? Or is this something we will do through the class? I'm so confused and trying to get all this stuff done! :/

Wow, these past few weeks have really been flying by! Only 2 more weeks to go!!

I ordered my name tag a few weeks ago but have been out of town so I have yet to pick it up. My stethoscope is an old pink one I got last year from a uniform shop (I got my BP cuff there as well).

I also plan on bringing my Mac to class but I guess I will have to put a Windows OS on it to make it compatible for all our school stuff.

I have yet to buy shoes because I HATE closed toed shoes... especially white ones.

I haven't purchased my books yet but they are all saved to a shopping cart on Amazon.

O.K. that's all the progress I've made in these last few weeks :)

Also- does anyone seen our calendar?? I wanted to know what holidays we have off but the only thing I could find about it just said that our calendar may differ from the regular SF one...

Floridagirl I have a mac as well and I bought an iWork program and the guy at best buy told me that you can change any document into a word document to send it to other people. He made it sound like it was just like the Microsoft program you can buy; however, this iWork program is about 50 dollars cheaper. I have played around with it a little bit and so far I like it and is basically just like any Microsoft program with a few minor differences.

What's this about getting a stethoscope, BP cuff and a pen light? Do we need to get those and if so, how do you know?? Thanks!

Page 14 of the student handbook states that ASN students will need a steth, bandage scissors, and a watch with a second hand. I'm sure they will go over all of this on the first day.

I actually had a nightmare a few days ago that I missed the first day of school and got kicked out of the program. :uhoh3:

You can be sure that I will leave my house leave early early early on the 22nd. I don't even know how I will be able to sleep next Sunday night!

LittleBirdie-

I'm paranoid of the same thing. I'll be dropping my daughter off at Sonshine day (maybe a mile away from SFC), on the first day of school. I'm afraid of getting stuck in the Hidden Oak school zone traffic on 23rd St. I heard that the school zone doesn't start until 7:20 so hopefully I'll be through it before it starts.

MsOrangeandBlue-

I don't think we need a BP cuff, but I'm getting one to practice BP on my family.

I too wonder how they're going to split up the class. I think we may all test together but we'll be learning in smaller classes. It wouldn't be beneficial to have us all together during clinicals. Regarding clinicals, I don't think we have real pts until we're checked off on our 'skills.'

See you guys soon (even though I don't know what anybody looks like yet; we should have a secret handshake or code word...........ahh the nerd in me emerges:o)

Emmaline

Is everyone ready to start nursing school TOMORROW?!?!?!
