Salaries can be in the high 40s to low 50's per hour depending on shift, etc. But be aware that new grad programs only start two to three times per year.
Apts can range from $1500 to $2000 per month and if in San Francisco proper does not include rent for the parking space at the apt. Depending on what you call decent.
Defintiely have a job in place before moving if you are not already in the area, better to have the job first and then the apt, not the other way around.
Surrounding areas can be from one end of the Peninsula to the other as well as the East Bay. As well as the North Bay that is across the Golden Gate Bridge from the city.

I know alta bates in Berkeley starts new grads at around $45/hour.
A one bedroom apartment in a decent area is probably around $1100 (in an area about 20-30 minutes from the city). Obviously much more expensive if you want to be right in the city.
