san antonio methodist healthcare system

U.S.A. Texas

I am a new ADN grad and i am currently living in colorado where the job market is more or less frozen solid. so i started putting in applications all over the country. The only thing i am super concerned about is a strong training program, or nurse residency program. Texas seems to be the place responding to my applications and i want to get the inside scoop....is san antonio methodist healthcare system a good place to work? i think i am leaning to the metropolotin methodist hospital in particular.

also where is the best place to live in san antonio? I'm a single woman so safety and proximity to work would be the two most important things to me.

thanks so much for any info. i have not been to texas since i was 3 years old so i need any help i can get!

I may not be much help but since no one else has responded...

I am still in school but I plan on working for Methodist. I have friends in the Methodist healthcare system and they love it. Metropoliton Methodist is downtown so anywhere you live will be easy access although it seems most of the city is under construction! :) In terms of where to live I suggest anywhere on the Northside. I love the Alamo Heights area which is a bit expensive but really nice.

Hope this helps a little bit. Good luck!

I just got hired at the metropolitan hospital. i'm pretty excited. everyone was super nice and friendly. thanks for the housing advice. I don't know a single person in San Antonio so any insider perspective is very welcomed!

Any RNs from Texas know if the city of Houston pays more than San Antonio hospitals? Thanks - maverickemt.

Houston pays a few dollars more per hour, but most hospitals in the Houston area are not hiring right now... many are on a hiring freeze, so I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket so to speak...

I live in the medical district - about 2 blocks from the methodist hospital. There are several nice apartment complexs with variable rents close to the hospitals. I think traffic is an important issue. I like the medical district, north side and Alamo Heights is great also. I have had private patients at Methodist and I think the staff is excellent and very kind.

First of all, After having worked at Methodist Healthcare in Medical Center here in San Antonio I can tell you I wouldn't put my worst enemy's dead mother in one of thier hospitals.

This organization is a profit hungry money machine that puts profits before patient safety and quality nursing and patient care. In my time at Methodist I witnessed numerous acts and policies implemented by managment geared twards saving money and cutting costs that contribute to potential dangers for patients in thier care.

The nursing care I have witnessed is sub standard, inadaqueate at best, and impersonal. As a new graduate I would highly recommend a number of other healthcare organizations in San Antonio and South Texas but I would steer far and clear away from the Methodist Healthcare system.

As other uses have mentioned on here, ANY organization that offers large lump sum signon bonuses has something to hide and is only offering a lucrative signon bonues to attract qualified applicants that would normally look elsewhere.

When I first started at Methodist and noticed the large group(at least 100) of employees hired within my orientation class I was quite suprised. Later I learned that just to maintain current staffing levels the organization conducts orientations on a weekly basis, additionally, it turns out my group was small. This should have been an ominious sign from the begining.

Catalina- did you have to go in person to interview or was it conducted over the phone? I am just wondering what the process is- I am having noluck finding a job in Houston :(

i just arrived in san antonio last night! i'm pretty excited to get to work. the hospital is HUGE!

my interview was over the phone. i've never gotten a job while wearing jammies before! ;)

I work at Methodist Hospital in the Medical Center and although I can only speak for me and the unit I work in, I LOVE my job. The majority of my coworkers are great and also enjoy working in our unit.

As for places to live I would reccomend the NW side of SA. They are building a ton out toward the Rim (IH-10 past 1604).
