Okay so I've done the math. Several have said that starting pay in SA for nurses is about $22/hour. Mind you I live in California so that seems really low, but I know that the cost of living is lower is SA than in San Diego. Well at $22/hour thats about $38,000/year. My question for all you who live there is this, can a family of 4 survive on that. We would like to buy a house, and my husbands job may or may not transfer so we would be depending on my income until he gets a job. Realistically i want to know if that is a liveable income.
out here I'm being offered 36.00/hour but of course the average house is a bazillion dollars so good luck getting a house. There's always adds saying that pay is great here blah, blah, blah...but they never tell you that to rent a house in an area of town where you can leave you doors unlocked during daytime hours starts at $3000.
any info would be helpful.

You can buy a small, ~1500 sq feet, 3/2 house in a safe neighborhood here (the NW side) for around $125,000. You can find some cheaper or more expensive depending on what you're looking for.

Biggest benefit to living in SA: Proximity to New Braunfels Smokehouse and their tasty turkey jerky.
Boratz,
that is so funny, we were at dinner on sunday and a friend was talking about that place! Evidentilly its legendary!!! Thanks for the tip. We'll be going to check it out soon, I have to pass the dang NCLEX first.
Wow 1500 square feet in NW San Antonio, I bet that has a yard with it. we pay $1400/month on a 2b/1bath apartment, no yard, not even a common area, coin laundry (only one washer and dryer) in the back. I'm sure we could get cheaper but that would mean living more 'inner city.'
Food, housing, its sounding better and better!
of course there's the whole living near the ocean:rolleyes:, maybe after studying today i'll go down by the water for a bit; to remind myself why we're here.
It's a great place, and we stop by every time we go to San Antonio to see the grandkids. I think they're closed for now, though, and about to open a new building.

My mortgage on my house that I bought a couple of years ago is less than $1400. That includes insurance and taxes. I do have a decent sized back yard. At least it seems like a decent size when I'm mowing it!
As far as something San Antonio has that can compete with the ocean, I got nothin' :)

Cost of living in SA will be cheaper than in San Diego, but the weather won't compare, and some would argue the scenery isn't so great here either, at least compared with San Diego. Most Californians I know would move back in a heartbeat if they could afford it.
Also, no city is crime free. I live in a great neighborhood outside Austin where the most severe crime is kids tearing up mailboxes, and I never leave my doors unlocked during the day.
That said, I'd take SA over Austin at this point. Austin is becoming very elitist. SA still has a laid-back feel to it. Good luck!

My sister lives in Cibolo (which is about 20 minutes from SA and 15 minutes from New Braunfels). She has been there for a year and loves it. It is a growing town, very nice. She has a 4 bed/2 bath brand new home with a "mother-in-law" room upstairs with a bath. She has a fenced in yard, large kitchen and LR and large den with a garage. She pays $1300/month. By the way, the house was brand new when she moved in last year. The neighborhood is nice and the area is great.
There are still lots of things to do in SA. You are about 2-3 hours from Corpus Christi, so you could ride down to the beach! Hope this helps you at least some! Good luck!

I once came across a website that listed cost of livings of states (average?) vs nursing salarys. I think I remember Texas being number one, but I want to know about 2 and 3. Anybody know?
