  1. love your response, gotta show my husband who doesnt understand why i get off 30 min late or take a 15 min lunch if i even get to take one!!!
  2. can't help you out on work there, just know that my mom lives in Bmt, and has been to St.E as a pt and has been unhappy each time she has went for one reason or another. I have also heard others say they do not like the hospital b/c of nursing, layout, techs, etc. mom loves Bmt area and would not live anywhere else at this time.
  3. Woodville has an LVN program through their hospital called Tyler County School of Vocational Nursing. I graduated in December and would rec it to anyone, it is a GREAT program!
  4. You can also remember the acronym ROME. R=Respiratory O=Opposite (meaning that if your PAO2 and pH are of opposite values, you have a resp problem) M=Metabolic E=Equal (meaning that if your values are equal, both inc or both dec, then you have metabolic prob). Then, to remember whether it is acidic or alkaline (base) look at the pH scale and know it goes 0-10 or 1-10 (I am half way asleep), and dependent on what side of the scale your value is on (with normal pH being 7.35-7.45 for adults and 7.36-7.44 for Pedi) tells you acid or base. A=acid B=base. They go in alphabetical order 7.45 is B for base. (It may make more sense if you draw it out!!) I hope I did not confuse you more!!!
  5. I hope you found some good info on Thalassemia. My friend in school has this. I had never heard of it, nor had her dr while she was little. They kept giving her iron, later on realizing that iron would be of no benefit. She has the beta (I think) the type that affects Meditteranean (she is Italian). I would think Knowledge Def. would be a good one
  6. That is so crazy about SSI benefits. My 12 year son TRULY has ADHD and has suffered for some time now with it. He has gone through several diff meds, only to switch again yesterday. He was Dx by a psychiatrist using the Toggle test (I think that was the test, it was 6 yrs ago and I have slept since then, I think!) He now sees a great psych that is well worth the 1 hour drive. Anyway, I would never in a million years think to get SSI for him,. that is crazy to me!! There are quite a few people in my class that started on these meds once school started. I was DX with ADD late 06 and I too refuse to accept it. I do, however, take meds for it only on class days. I do not take the meds on the weekend, or for clinicals. I feel it has worked with great benefit to me, I can actually listen to my instructor without daydreaming and all the other weird things I do!!
  7. I live in East Texas, but not getting much bad weather. The storm seems to be staying off to the North and not making that Westward turn they had anticipated, which is good news for us here. They cancelled my school and clinicals. Area schools are still going today. So far, it is just dreary outside and drizzling/raining on and of all day. Thank you all for prayers and let's continue to pray for the other areas this storm has hit and may hit.
  8. study, study, study!! I like to write and re-write my notes. In Pharmacology, I also sorted my meds out by class, then found which ones have side effects in common, see what is different, and if all else failed, I just would study the main ones really hard, the ones that are given alot....GOOD LUCK.....I know you can do it!!
  9. Yellow Legal Paper!! Sounds corny, I know, but something about it stands out and makes me look at it. I re-write my notes on it and when sifting through papers, yellow always stands out and I grab it and study.
  10. WIA is a program that goes through the state. Here in Texas, we go to our local Workforce Solutions center and apply. Nursing is a career in demand, so they help with nursing school. There are certain criteria you must meet of course, just call them to make an appointment to speak with someone about it. I think you have to apply for Financial Aid first before they will help you. Even if you get financia aid, you may still get help through WIA (my friend does). Also, some hospitals will pay for your school, you usually have to sign a contract to work for them afterwards.
  11. great points!! esp #4!! I told my family/friends that I would not see or talk to them hardly this year!! They have just now come to realize that I was not joking!!! (I have been going since Jan!!) Also, don't stress over your housework or kid's school because this is just 1 year (or however long for the rest of you) we take out of our lives. The house will be there and the kids will be okay at the end of the year....even if they don't know you!!!LOL
  12. Yes, this is the best way to go about it to learn more. I usually refer to Mosby's Dictionary only if I am not sure which to use. By the way, we are not allowed to use Nursing DX Handbooks (which I like better b/c it forces us to think outside the box) Critical thinking is so important and that is what the whole Nursing Process is about. We also have to turn in pathophysiology for every patient. We use our textbooks to do this also, which helps out alot.....esp when Med Surg comes along!
  13. That is so true, they have a list of careers that are in demand and if you are going to school for one of them, they most likely help you. Many WIA counselors may not offer you the info that they can help in more ways than tuition, so you just have to ask. I also have 5 kids and they helped me through one semester last year of school. They even paid for my last series of Hep B. They may also pay for any drug screens ordered by the school, shots required, CPR class, etc. You can almost name it and they can help. Now of course, there are more papers to fill out for more services, but it's worth it. When they helped me, I just had to bring in a grade report every week to their office and they just asked me how school was going and I received gas cards. It was only $20/week in gas cards, but it sure did help!! If you are having trouble in school with any classes, they can also help you with tutoring. My friend also went through the WIA program and they paid her rent and utilities for 3 months.....so don't be scared to ask, esp with 5 kids!! Hope I helped you and encouraged you to accept their assistance!
  14. Risk for Unstable Blood Glucose Ineffective Health Maintenance Noncompliance Risk for Infection Adult Failure to Thrive Like others have said, there are several Nursing DX you can use. Do you have a Mosby's Dictionary? If so, you can look in Appendix 19 and look up the disease process your patient has and it gives you different Nursing DX you can use....... I just look at the list of Nursing DX in the back of my text and go through each one thinking if it fits my patient. That helps me alot! Hope this helps you some!
