Samuel Merritt University (SMU) ABSN Summer 2024

Published

Hi all! Wanted to start a discussion for those who applied for Summer 2024 cohorts at Samuel Merritt so we can support each other. I applied to the Oakland and San Mateo campuses. I'm also excited to hear back if I got in to the Nursing Success Seminar January 2024 program.

Nothing yet for me! I was considering trying to call because other programs I applied to are looking for commitments soon.

It would be very nice to know before April so students can plan accordingly. I.e. put in notice at work, commit to other schools if not accepted, etc.

According to the academic calendar linked below, ABSN Summer 1 classes in San Mateo begin April 29. So only finding out if we were accepted in April seems a little crazy.

Has anyone heard back? Also they extended the deadline to 3/15/24 now so I'm assuming we won't find out until April?

They must not be getting that many applications if they extended the deadline twice now. The deadline was Dec.1 and they extended it another 3 months !?!? That seems very weird. I also want to call but I feel like I will be left with no solid information.

I completely agree! I had emailed them a week ago and they sent back a super generic email about hearing back approximately 10-12 weeks after the due date. But what does that even mean if the due date keeps changing? I wish they'd be more transparent. Doesn't seem fair for us who applied on time months ago.

The waiting game is really not fun and if they are extending the deadlines I feel like they should send an email out updating us about when we will hear back?

I just called admissions. The lady said, "if you applied and submitted your application on December 1st, expect to hear back during the first two weeks of March" so I'm praying we all hear back and get accepted. Also she mentioned to keep a look out for the email in your spam folder, in the past students have received their emails in their spam folder.

Thank you so much for calling and sharing this information! It's extremely helpful. I completely agree with @pilacat about it feeling unfair to those of us that applied by the December 1st deadline.

it also sucks that we can't even update our application even though the deadline was moved twice ? I hope the two deadline extensions mean not many people applied giving us all a higher chance of getting in!

Hoping they do let us know soon and that they're extending the deadline due to lack of applicants... Just wish they were communicating all this better so we're not all freaking out. I know other people are getting accepted to other programs and need to let them know if they'll be attending their program over SMU. Glad I found this forum and that I'm not the only one stressing ?

the academic calendar shows the registration, orientation and class start dates for ABSN 2024 for all locations it's just a word doc that downloads once you click the ABSN option

To anyone who reads this AND has also read the negative comment on the first page of this thread...

I'm a current SMU ABSN student and yes, you are teaching yourself a lot. However, every single one of my prereqs was the same whether at a CC (albeit online) or at the university I got my Bachelor's from. Lean on other students, the ample tutoring available, and going to the review sessions hosted by the tutors (and usually your instructor will hold one too) and you'll be fine. Also, if you email the professors, they are more than happy to meet with you to discuss your exam scores, go over things you need help with, etc. You don't get help if you don't ask for it.

I don't find that I need tutoring to teach me concepts, but instead to just give me a run-through of concepts from another perspective, which helps me. My tutor and I agree that as long as you manage your time well, you will succeed in this program. I have no past medical experience outside of doing covid tests for a hospital for a year, and I'm excelling at this program. In fact, I'm doing better that some of my friends with past medical experience because they're relying too much on past experiences and not on what is being taught in class.

Put in the work, use your resources, and you'll do great.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's nice and refreshing to read a current student's perspective that is not negative. Which campus are you currently studying at? I am mostly concerned about the lack of preceptorship. Have they addressed this at all?
