Samuel Merritt University Nursing Reputation

U.S.A. California

Published

I am starting the ABSN program this Fall 2009 in San Francisco, and I have heard certain things on the reputation of Samuel Merritt's nursing program. Because I'm wondering of the job outlook after graduating next year, I am curious to hear what others have heard or know regarding the reputation of Samuel Merritt nursing graduates, whether they're good or bad. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To be honest, SJSU is so impacted it would take at least 3 years minimum to finish the nursing program. Everyone is fighting for classes and it is really a stress I don't want to deal with. Besides, I think I will get a far better education at Samuel Merritt. Yes, it is expensive but it is worth it in the long run!

I hear ya! Well I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

Hi cHaNkStA & lubyduby,

Did you guys get a username yet? If you have, you can go to the SMURF site ( i think there's a link to it on the SMU webpage). You can log on and search the courses for the fall. First semester students have to take Introduction to Professional Nursing, Mental Health Nursing (clinical?), Pathophysiology, and Health Assessment. When I was looking at the schedule of courses, it looked like there were two sections for each course. I went to a little meeting during the spring semester over at SMU and I was told that we wouldn't register until orientation and orientation is like 3 days before the fall semester starts? Kind of lame, especially for those that need to inform their employers...

cHaNkStA,

If you submitted the FAFSA, the financial aid counselor should have access to it. I'm surprised they haven't contacted you yet. I already received my financial aid award letter. You should double check with one of the financial aid counselors.

Lubyduby,

What partnership program are you transferring from?

I did check! And I just realized my parents never signed it off! So these pass 3 months, I was under the impression I had FAFSA completed. So I re-registered my parent's PIN and signed it off. I just got the confirmation email from FAFSA yesterday saying it's been completed and so I'm going to call SMU in a couple days to see if they received it. We should make a SMU Fall 2010 (non-ABSN) thread because we're totally thread jacking this thread.

fyi for you incoming SMU students, clinical registration info was sent out this morning. you can access all the forms in your SMU email

I don't think us "newbies" got anything! I checked my SMU inbox and I didn't have anything!

How did you get a SMU inbox? I didn't get one!

Hey,

go to the homepage and on the left hand side it will say webmail. click there and it will ask for your user name and password which is your firstname.lastname for example if your name is John Smith it would be john.smith and then you just use the same password that you used to get into the system for class schedules ect....Let me know if you received anything.

Thank for the information everyone. After doing more research I've decided SFSU is the place for me. So, I won't see you all this fall but good luck and congrats!

cHaNkStA~ Yes, I got into the actual nursing program as well as the university. It can be a bit confusing :-)

I read a few people on this thred saying that because of the budget cuts it will take longer than expected at a state school. For the most part that is a myth. SFSU is a 5 semester nursing program and SJSU is a 6 semester nursing program. According the the nursing department that is the time they feel it takes to really learn and grasp the information. The only people that can register for any nursing class are the people in that major! No one else can go and sign up for a nursing class if they are not technically in that major. They are very strict about it.

The only way the budget cuts could potentially be an issue are with the upper division GE units. There are only a couple and you have 5 semesters to do them plus summers. There are so many interesting ones to choose from that it shouldn't be a big deal. :)

Thanks again and good luck!

I actually heard from a friend that goes to SJSU that the budget cuts are affecting the program. Classes get filled quickly so not everyone can get into the classes they need so it takes longer to finish. But congrats and good luck to you!

I didn't get anything...but a email from the bookstore about registering to rent books, lol! Are you sure this was for new students?

i'm sorry to hear about your friend. to work so hard to get into the program and then have issues like that is just not fair . . . i suppose sfsu is just more strict about it. i also have two friends in the nursing program at sjsu, one in third semester and another about to finish and they've had no problems.

good luck to you as well!

Weird, how did you register for Webmail in general? I never received a letter saying that I have an email account. All I got was the acceptance packet with a student ID number? (a 9 digit number)
