Samuel Merritt University Nursing Reputation

U.S.A. California

Published

I am starting the ABSN program this Fall 2009 in San Francisco, and I have heard certain things on the reputation of Samuel Merritt's nursing program. Because I'm wondering of the job outlook after graduating next year, I am curious to hear what others have heard or know regarding the reputation of Samuel Merritt nursing graduates, whether they're good or bad. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

From what I have heard from working nurses is that Samuel Merritt is a great school. If you plan on staying in the Bay area after you graduate, it is a well respected program in this area and you will probably have better job opportunities!

SFSUmegs,

Congrats on your acceptance to both SFSU and SMU. I will be starting the BSN program this fall at SMU. SMU is definitely EXPENSIVE. I don't know the cost at SFSU so I would definitely think about that...I don't know if you got accepted to the BSN accelerated program or BSN 2+2 program. I know the accelerated program is 50K+, YIKES. Honestly, I wish I applied to more nursing schools so that I could weigh out my options but unfortunately my program was apart of the partnership nursing program.

I'm assuming you're in the 2+2 program? (I am as well), but heading to SMU in the fall.

I think there was a topic about SMU vs SFSU before. But alike to what krazievie3t6url said, SMU is ridiculously expensive as compared to SFSU. My question is, did you get into SFSU? or did you get into the SFSU Nursing program, because that is two totally different subjects. Also note the many budget cuts that SFSU has had which forced many students to stay at SFSU longer than intended and not being able to take certain classes, as well as summer school courses.

But if you got into both, you can't really have a bad choice for either, it just depends how much you want to pay.

I was considering applying to Samuel Merrit but and just got accepted to CSU Stanislaus. I've decided to go to Stanislaus even though it will take longer. The only negative thing I have heard it that because SMU is so fast paced, some of the nursing students are a little disoriented once they hit the floor of an acute unit. I am going to take my time and enjoy my education (and save a bundle in the long run). Of course time is money, those SMU students are working in a year (if they can find a job) but in this economy, I don't want to take that gamble and have a huge student loan payment after I graduate. good luck to you. There are a lot of SMU grads who loved it.

cHaNkSta, what partnership school did you go to? I just finished up at Mills! I will also be at SMU in the fall! I am so excited! Have you completed all the financial aid stuff already?!!?

I'm from Holy Names! I guess I'll be seeing you in the fall. Uhm, I actually just received my SMU packet and am working on the health packet. I'm hoping to get my CPR licensure next week. But other than financial aid, I haven't done anything yet. I'm not sure where to start? I just remember doing my FAFSA which I submitted to SMU in Feb.

Hi! I will also be in your class this Fall. Do you have any idea when we will register? Or do you know what are schedule will be like? I'm trying to plan my routine but have no idea if we go to school 3 days or 5 days any information would be great. Thanks,

Hi cHaNkStA & lubyduby,

Did you guys get a username yet? If you have, you can go to the SMURF site ( i think there's a link to it on the SMU webpage). You can log on and search the courses for the fall. First semester students have to take Introduction to Professional Nursing, Mental Health Nursing (clinical?), Pathophysiology, and Health Assessment. When I was looking at the schedule of courses, it looked like there were two sections for each course. I went to a little meeting during the spring semester over at SMU and I was told that we wouldn't register until orientation and orientation is like 3 days before the fall semester starts? Kind of lame, especially for those that need to inform their employers...

cHaNkStA,

If you submitted the FAFSA, the financial aid counselor should have access to it. I'm surprised they haven't contacted you yet. I already received my financial aid award letter. You should double check with one of the financial aid counselors.

Lubyduby,

What partnership program are you transferring from?

Thanks! I did get my username and I have been on the website, but when I search for classes nothing is available. I don't think I am searching correct. I don't the the course ID. I will try again and see what happens. I didn't go to their partner schools, I did my pre-req's from SJSU . Where did you go?

No problem! When you search just select only the term and the courses should show up. I went to Mills College in Oakland. How come you decided to go to SMU, doesn't SJSU have a nursing program? I'm sure its cheaper there too? I have a friend that's also doing nursing that goes to SJSU.

To be honest, SJSU is so impacted it would take at least 3 years minimum to finish the nursing program. Everyone is fighting for classes and it is really a stress I don't want to deal with. Besides, I think I will get a far better education at Samuel Merritt. Yes, it is expensive but it is worth it in the long run!
