Hello everyone!

I just wanted to start a thread for the Spring 2021 term at SMU. Has anyone applied or planning on applying? Feel free to drop your stats and scores!

Hi! I also applied for Spring 2021 and unforuntately did not get in either. However, for the people that did get in, did any of you have just volunteer hours or did all of the admitted students mainly have paid healthcare experience? I have about 100 hours of volunteer experience at various hospitals and a doctor's office so I was just wondering if this is why I didn't get it ?

I had paid healthcare experience. I’ve been working as a dental assistant for over a year. I wasn’t sure if they would accept that, but they did ?

Hi! I have 2500 hours of paid experience as a CNA and I didn't get in, but I am waitlisted. I also have 40 hours of unpaid.

I attended UCSB and had a 2.2 GPA without receiving a degree (I had also been on academic probation at this school as well. I was a 17/18 year old who was clearly not ready for the demands of a 4-year university at this time). I started to take classes at Chabot College in 2018 and have a 3.93 GPA. Chabot is pretty much where I did all my major prereqs and is where I really redeemed myself. My cumulative GPA with both schools is a 2.73. My prereqs GPA is a 3.7 and my science GPA is a 4.0. I completed the HESI before apps were due and sent in my score which was a 96.5%. I am a certified EMT with 2 years experience. Before that I was working as a DSP/Home Care Specialist working with individuals with mental and physical disabilites for 2 years, making a total of 4 years in the health sector. I speak English and very little Spanish. I had 4 letters of recommendation, 2 from my science professors (physiology and Microbiology) and 2 from my coworkers who are EMTs as well. I clearly started off really poorly in my higher education career but showed some redeeming qualities later on which must have convinced them (They must love a good redemption story). Just know that as long as you show passion and dedication, a school will want you as one of their students. So do NOT give up. I am rooting for you!!

@Chinwendu Okeke Amazing story of perseverance! I, too, went to UC (Berkeley) straight out of high school at 17. I dropped out because of financial constraints. Ended up returning to Ohlone College 6 years later after being in the workforce. My GPA there was 2.55. Didn't really feel connected to that school, ended up going to Peralta Colleges from 2018-2020. Best decision I could have made for my education. Got a 4.0 my entire time with Peralta. Overall GPA averages out to 3.54.

Took 3 AP exams in high school that fulfilled some of my prereqs. It's been a long ride.

I am mentioning to all because my career, like Chinwendu's, has not been spotless. The lottery system of some of the state schools (e.g., CSUEB) scared me. I feel like SMU evaluates applications holistically and on a more personal level. I have felt connected and informed throughout the entire process, despite the delays. Fortunate to have been admitted.

All, please do not give up! Out of high school, I was rejected by UCLA and dropped out of UCB. I felt like a complete embarrassment after the latter occurred. Rooting for everyone here.

Specializes in MA.

Keep your head up! I know it's tough, but this year was so competitive. A lot of public schools canceled their programs which pushed a lot of people to SMU. There are many ways to get to where you want to be! Rejection does not reflect who you are, or how good of a nurse you will be. One of my professors got rejected her first time applying and she was just heartbroken. She then reapplied and got a full ride! She ended up rejecting it because she realized it wasn't for her. Don't give up ?

Thank you, I really needed this encouragement today. I'm going to crash study for the HESI and apply to SMU again for the fall. I'm also going to start figuring out what else I can do to boost my GPA. Best of luck to you!

Does anyone know how SMU is gonna be handling lectures/labs/clinicals? I’m assuming it’s gonna be a hybrid system with online lectures. I’m just curious is labs are gonna be virtual and clinical say the hospitals...

I had volunteer hours from Kaiser that go back to high school years but more recently from Summit which is right next to SMU in their ICU before the pandemic.

Hey y'all, just letting you know I just declined my offer today, so that should open up a spot for someone on waitlist ? best of luck

Can anyone confirm the deadline where accepted students had to accept offer/ provide deposit? I'm assuming that after that deadline date the wait list will be updated and we can expect an update on waitlist place

I believe it's November 20.

Just an update for people on the waiting list. I was third and got my acceptance letter today! For those of you who are 4,5 etc keep the faith.  Rooting for all of you.

I applied for Spring 2021 and was admitted.  High GPA, good recommendations, I work in a health system, have substantial volunteer hours and a little life experience to go along with.

During my working on prerequisites I worked full-time and still was able to graduate, so I am here to say that you need to keep working and applying.

To those on the waitlist, when my daughter applied and was waitlisted she got in 3 weeks prior to the start of class!  So don't give up!

I don't see where I read it now because the thread is so well visited, but I have heard GREAT things about the SFSU BSN program!  I applied there and didn't even make it through to the review process!

Can't what to meet. my classmates!

Hey guys!

I know this thread has probably come to its end, but I just wanted to let everyone know that I got off the waitlist!! I was originally #5, got updated to #1 on Nov. 20, and I just heard back this morning! I am so grateful and have been nervous ever since we originally heard back. It doesn't feel real ?! Excited to meet you all! ? I am still rooting for everyone else that is reapplying or is on the WL too!
