Samuel Merritt Oakland: Fall 2011 - Case Management

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Has anyone received an interview yet? I am anxiously awaiting each day, but still waiting for my GPA to be calculated on NursingCAS (submitted on 2/14 and completed by them on 2/28). :uhoh3: Anyways, I would love to hear about how others are doing during this process!

Hey kzimmerman,

Did you get a confirmation about your application being forwarded from NursingCAS in an e-mail or from the messages on the NursingCAS website or through SM? I haven't received anything like that. I wonder if I should call NursingCAS or SM, but I don't want to bug them. Someone in an earlier message said this, so maybe there's still hope: "I submitted mine in mid-December and actually didn't get an e-mail from Samuel Merritt confirming that my application was complete until AFTER I received the call notifying me of my early admit!"

Sorry, but what do you mean by out of pocket?

The only thing I've heard is for the ABSN program I applied to and it was just that they reviewed my app and its in progress now. The wait is killing me for any program!!

Hi Lele07,

Sorry - I still use "business speak" on occasion (business speak = phrases that don't directly say what they mean & don't make any sense but everyone uses them). Out of pocket, meaning unreachable, out of the office, etc. So the admissions for ELMSN was out of the office from 2/26 to 3/1, I believe.

I got an email back from NursingCAS about the date my information was sent over. I asked them through their automated form on the "Contact Us" area of the site. I'd go for it, since it's a simple look-up and reply: you wouldn't be taking a lot of time from them.

Thanks for the info on the thread from the other applicant. Can I tell you I SO understand how you feel? I am still keeping my fingers crossed for both of us, of course, and will keep you posted. :)

Hi All,

I've been following the thread for the 2011 FNP applicants to SMU. I have a funny feeling that SMU is interviewing for FNP first, so they can then shift the remainder of that applicant pool to the CM track. Especially since FNP applicants have received notification that CM is still taking applications. Verrrry interesting.

Hi CarolC415,

You know, I was kind of thinking that too, but I was hoping that it was because the applicant pool for FNP is so much larger than the CM applicant pool. I think I'm going to look back into some older threads to see if anyone on FNP boards were offered CM track after interviewing.

I'll let you guys know what I find out.

Are you applying for the CM track too? Was it your first choice?

Hi Carol415,

Well, some good news, but I'm going to have to use some deductive reasoning here. Take a look from this post from 2009 on a Samuel Merritt FNP thread:

Hi MarathonRunner:

Congrats! :yeah:GOod luck on your interview. No, I will not be involved with CM interviews bc they are typically conducted by case management faculty. They are typically one on one, which I think is a lot better than a group interview. The interview from what my CM colleagues have said was pretty normal. It's not like the FNP. Just be sure you know why you want to be a case manager, share your life experiences, know your strengths, weaknesses, etc. Be likeable, confident, upbeat, and impassioned on why you what to go down this path of case management, and I'm sure you'll do GREAT! Best of LUCK! :wink2:

So, what it looks like is that it is a completely different kettle of fish from the interview standpoint. By having CM's participating in the interview, as well as direct questions related to one's decision to pursue a career in CM, it appears to be a targeted interview. I'm assuming the post is still relevant.

Let me know if this is helpful at all. Also, by brain is a little thrashed today (lots of studying) so let me know if I need to clarify anything -- not sure how articulate I am today.

To kzimmermann and lele07:

Since interviews are being held this monday and next, I think you should contact admissions. Try to get a hold of the admissions counselor for the ELMSN at Oakland. Someone posted her extension in the FNP thread...

Thank you, Bblue11! Appreciate the heads up.

I called & followed up with email on 3/1, which is a week after my app was sent from Nursing CAS. I could call this Tuesday to follow up, but if you have any thoughts that it might come off as too pesky, by all means let me know! :)

Yey! I got in!!!

Yey! I got in!!!

Woo hoo!! Congratulations, Bblue11 !! :)

Congrats, Bblue!

SMU is known to be notoriously disorganized with regards to administration,

so the best approach is to be pesky, but really nice about it.

I had known that faculty conducts the interviews, so it's true

it's different than FNP. The CM role is very challenging and I'm sure they're

trying to find the best students who will be most successful.

Good luck if you're still waiting to hear! :)

Hi CarolC415,

Thank you so much for the information. :D OK -- I'm going to try one more time later on today or tomorrow.

Good thing is I'm definitely nice, and especially when I'm having to be pesky (Project Management experience). It's not always easy to do, because I hate being another email in the Inbox, but I should at least try.

As well, thanks so much for your insight on the CM role. I know this sounds a little trite, but especially from working side-by-side with my brother's Case Manager for the last 6 months (massive stroke), all of my experience, education and skills benefit this role. I decided on this path about a year ago, but my experience with my brother confirmed my choice.

I guess the good thing is I already got a job offer as a CM -- but she thought I was already out of nursing school! Lol. Now I just have to get into SMU...

Anyway, enough rambling. I so appreciate your help. Thank you again, CarolC.

Addendum all -- I decided on a career in nursing 3 years ago (2008), I chose Case Management as a discipline 1 year ago. Not that it's important, but still thought I should clarify.
