Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2021

Just wanted to start a thread for the students applying to this time frame! Deadline's around the corner. ?

I applied last cycle and don't remember ever getting this email. I feel like last cycle was a little chaotic on their end with covid so they may have never sent it. I’m still sitting here overthinking everything so you’re not alone ?

Current SMU student here. If you are offered a spot in another nursing program I encourage you to choose that over SMU. The "teaching" method at SMU is called "flipped classroom" which means you do not have lecture with your professors and are expected to teach yourself. Essentially, you are paying $80K to teach yourself.

I’ve heard this before. I work in healthcare and ALL of the nurses that are SMU grads tell me to choose a different option. Thank you for sharing your experience. Good luck with the rest of your journey.

I have a lot of nurses in my network and truthfully, I have never heard anyone say they were incredibly happy with their program. Everyone complains about some aspect of their school. Nursing school is fluff and teaches you the basics of safety (for yourself and pretty much how to keep your patient alive if it's not their time to go.) The many nurses I have spoken to say you learn so much in your first 1-2 years of working as an RN and these are things no program can teach. I am so sorry you have to go through the stress and chaos presented to you but if you can hang in there and graduate, I do think you'll be happy with the outcome. Ultimately nursing schools are a business and they need to produce a satisfactory service so I have a strong feeling SMU will eventually figure it out. If a lot of people fail, it makes the school look bad. Just some of my thoughts! Best wishes to you!

Hey, I’m not the OP, but I do agree with much of what you’re saying. My comment was in reference to SMU nurses I’ve worked with throughout the Bay Area. They’ve all told me they felt less qualified than their peers. I have a few applications out and my hope is to be offended admissions to a much cheaper option. Good luck to you!

Not sure if you’re aware of how Unitek has an “online” BSN program, but this sounds like they’re running a similar program now. Would you say that even Unitek would be better program (that is if SMU continues this method of “teaching” LOL)

I check the spam too but no luck. I hope so, this is the only school I applied.

Aww man! Did you get that initial preliminary email from early Jan.? And what was your first choice campus if you don't mind me asking!

I'm sorry. ? Don't be disheartened, it's not over yet! They haven't sent rejections yet either. And honestly, this funnel is so overloaded, soooo many qualified people aren't getting in!

^I've been telling this to myself everyday.

Yeah that’s true. I just don’t know what to do for another year if I don’t get in.
