SFSU as well. I was considering apply to a few ADN programs but I doubt I’ll get in because I don’t have past medical experience.

I honestly feel that as a barrier to entry for all nursing programs!

I think so, with the exception of ABSN programs. For instance, many ADN programs offer as many as 15 pt for those with MA/LVN/CNA backgrounds, and additional points for verifiable work experience. My Master’s is only worth 5 extra points.

Oh wow, that's good to know. Oh man about your Master's degree - what was it in if you don't mind my asking?

It’s in social work. As a medical social worker, I work very closely with nurses and doctors, so I’m surprised that ADN programs don’t offer more points for this work experience. Especially since Social worker to nurse is a common transition.

Yes, so true. And, everyone brings a unique experience and perspective to the table.

I don’t think they have a solid method of choosing applicants. We’re all just numbers and ultimately they just want their seats filled. This is my second time applying. Last cycle people who got in described their portfolio and mine was stronger than many of theirs (GPA, HESI/ work/ volunteer/ life experience). I wasn’t even waitlisted. When I asked for feedback they said there were many qualified people who deserved to get in who did not, and assured me I would eventually if I keep applying.

Hello!
I am admitted and I spoke people who were admitted before me, but they really seem to look at everyone application holistically (and who you are as person). Because at the end of the day, it is NOT about how smart you are, but rather it is who you are as person and can you succeed in this program. For example, if I was a patient, would I much rather have a really smart and bright nurse, with not the best characteristics or would I rather have a well-rounded student with superb characteristics serving me at the bedside? To serve as a nurse is all about the interpersonal experience and professionalism. I hope this helps for the future nurses. Stay strong!

I was told this at the 2019 Nursing Success Seminar, which is one reason why I want to attend SMU.  I’ve met and worked with several SMU alumni, all from very different backgrounds, none of which identified as “perfect” students.

Congratulations and good luck on your journey.

Congratulations on your admission. That is wonderful news. Which campus did you get admittance into?

For those who got admitted to the SF Campus for Samuel Merritt University for the April 2021 cohort. There is a facebook page!

Has anyone gotten any updates?

I checked in with SMU for their Oakland Summer Cohort May 2021 start date and they said decisions for that campus will be out mid-march!
