Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Just wanted to start an information-sharing thread for those applying for the ABSN Summer 19 cohort at Samuel Merritt University (in Oakland, CA and San Mateo, CA). Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi all, I am on the waitlist for ABSN June 2019 San Mateo cohort. At what point should I know that it won't happen this time around and that I definitely need to reapply and move on? ? Also, can anyone who got admitted share what is the acceptance deadline for you to submit your letter of intent for June 2019 San Mateo start date?

I would recommend reapplying. I was on the waitlist the first time around and didn't ever get a spot. This last time I applied and fortunately got in. The initial deadline was March 8th for those who got accepted, but I believe it varies based on if people are pulled off the waitlist.

Nice! Congrats ? So exciting! What number were you on the waiting list the first time? Wonder how many people are pulled off the waitlist this time? I believe I read somewhere here that the last deadline for acceptance was March 22nd.

Thank you for asking this question!

Hello there!

I was accepted to the June ABSN program - San Mateo and also interviewed for the ELMSN-FNP program. I was waitlisted for the ELMSN but there’s a possibility I could get off of it due to my spot. As of now, I’ve made my deposit and submitted my letter of intent for the ABSN program. It was due by March 8th. I too was waitlisted for the ABSN - San Mateo last cohort. I believe I was high teens or lower 20s. I called and asked them what I could do to improve my chances of getting in. Even though I scored high 80s/90s on the HESI, I retook it and improved all my scores. I also did a 9 week college level CNA program to get more patient interaction while running my own business and volunteering a minimum of 4 hrs a week at a hospital. I’d encourage you to reach out to them and see what you can do to improve your chances of getting in. Best of luck and I hope this helps! Keep getting after it ??!

No problem at all! I’d be happy to help more if I can. My time is pretty slim right now as I’m preparing to move 3.5 hours north (along with all the little things I have to take care of before starting school) but I’ll do what I can. It brings me joy knowing I can help and inspire ??.

Hi guys,

If you’re in the June cohort or on waitlist, I strongly advise you get your documents ready so you don’t get overwhelmed later.

1. Immunizations - make sure all up-to-date.

Hep B, MMR, Varicella, Flu vaccine, PPD/TST or IGRA, TDAP not TD.

2. CPR from AHA not Red Cross

3. Complete Physical Exam

4. Health insurance

See you all!!

Goodluck

I was 29 out of 70 last time when I was waitlisted, so I reapplied. Things I did to improve my application include rewriting my personal statement, became CPR certified, used my immediate supervisor as a LOR writer (who is the director of the health clinic I work at), and had anatomy in progress. Derric told me that my biggest blemish on my application was the C I got in anatomy, so retaking that would be in my best interest. Its still in progress because it won't end til May but maybe they saw it'll be at least fresh before starting at SM. My HESI was 91 so he said not to retake it. Hopefully that helps!

Do you guys think I should reapply? I'm #2 on the San Mateo waitlist for June. Deadline to reapply in April 1. :/ I haven't heard any word of movement on the waiting list and Derric is out of town won't be back till Friday.

Maybe try to reach out with Oakland/Sac Counselors to get advice whether to re-apply or not since you’re really close? Ask if re-applying would impact your current waitlist position. My guess is it won’t, but just to make sure? That’s Anne and Katharine’s contact per website. Goodluck!

Hi! I was wondering where does it say that we need a complete physical exam? Because I didn't see it when looking at the checklist!
