Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2015

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone,

I couldn't find any threads on Summer 2015 cohorts for the ABSN program at Samuel Merritt (San Mateo campus is my #1 choice), so I thought I'd start one! I was just curious to know anyone's opinion on how heavily they weigh each category of the application process. I have strong references, a solid work history including *some* health care (working with autistic adults for 3 years, except it isn't my most recent experience), and decent stats, although they could be stronger:

Sciences: 4.0 (so far, still in progress)

Overall: 3.6

TEAS: 89.3 (first try, but plan on taking again if needed)

I was really surprised to learn that they mostly look at Reading and Math scores from the TEAS, and not science (which was my highest score). Does anyone know if they rely on the classification? I was "advanced", but obviously would like to be "exceptional".

I am currently finishing up my writing samples, which I am finding the most challenging since it is hard to fit in all I want to say in 250-300 words. (CRAZY)

I am working on my application due September 1st, but am nervous since I still have classes in progress this Fall. Does anyone know if they really frown upon this? I know they say that it is suggested they are all finalized, but its okay if they are in progress. I am so anxious to get started in the program and learn!!!

Any advice is much appreciated!

Ashley127 check with a counseloer about that class. I know there are a few classes you can take a test at testing sites to test out of. I think you can buy a book to study from and test out. Might be worth looking into.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted. Any idea when we get our financial aid packages? San Mateo people do you already have?

I can say I am intimidated by the tution. With that said the job market is looking up. Plus it's only a year, where most programs are 2. Then we all can get jobs :)

Hey All,

I just found out I've been admitted to the Oakland Campus off the Wait-list! Looking forward to meeting my new classmates. For anyone else out there still following the forum who hasn't posted and are on the wait list, keep your heads up I wasn't sure what my chances were when i was #15...

Hi @rjquiggle ! Did they call you personally?? I was #11 and I haven't heard a thing! ??????????

@kevans127, I got an automated e-mail from the admissions department at 8am followed by another e-mail about two hours later from the admissions counselor who I had sent my updated transcripts to after my Admissions Review... I was seriously hedging my bets being number 15... If you were #11 maybe it's worth a phone call or e-mail to the admissions department? Good luck!

@rjquiggle - I am in! e-mail got lost in the shuffle. Woo hoo! Is there a facebook group? I've only been able to find one for 2015

@kevans127, congrats! No, I don't think there is a Facebook group for the Oakland program yet. There was some discussion on this forum of a Facebook group but I think it was for the San Mateo campus and with a quick Facebook search I can only find an ABSN San Mateo April Class of 2016 group.

Hi everyone,

here is an academic calendar to give you an idea on what dates things start.

Hey guys, I am going to the San Mateo June cohort. Let me know if you wanna connect and plan things out. [email protected]

I'm thinking about maybe renting a place close to campus; and we can plan in commute together to our clinicals. Lmk your thoughts!

Hi everyone! I was just accepted into the April cohort for San Mateo. I'm super excited to be joining this cohort. Is there a facebook group I can join? I can only find the April 2016 page, not a group, where we can actually communicate with each other. I haven't had orientation yet, but there is there any pertinent information I should know now? Also, I currently live in San Francisco and don't drive, so I am hoping I can carpool with someone who also lives in SF? I'd be happy to chip in for gas!

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

My husband is in the June San Mateo cohort but I was wondering if you have any information about loans? Is it possible to have the entire program funded by loans alone? My FNP was completely funded by loans but I hear a second bachelor's is different...

Thanks in advance!

I haven't receive all the material but I went to the orientation for April. One basically receives some money through scholarships and like 17000 from federal loans. Grand total is 112+k so one has to come up with 70K from private loans.

I am also worried about this because the interest of the loans varies and it can be very high. At this point I rather go to a masters entry because we have access to stafford loans.

Pros and cons are different for everyone because some can have better chance to get private loans with set interest rates.

Anyone know if we have to send in official transcripts in? I feel like I have so many questions. Hopefully orientation will help.
