Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2015
My husband is in the June San Mateo cohort but I was wondering if you have any information about loans? Is it possible to have the entire program funded by loans alone? My FNP was completely funded by loans but I hear a second bachelor's is different... Thanks in advance!

Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2015
Has anyone heard news on the San Mateo June cohort yet? Perhaps if you are all just hearing about Oakland, San Mateo will be next on their to-do list. Congrats to all who have made it! I was a Sacramento ELMNS-er back in 2007, but my husband is trying to get into San Mateo ABSN this summer. Wishing all of you the best of luck...

A new hire expecting a very unexpected surprise in 9 months! HELP!
Hey MissBrittney, Thanks for the reply. I suppose my only hope is PTO, but because I'll have been working there less than a year, I'll only have 16 days accrued. I guess that's better than nothing... Census has been low, but I'm going to try and pick up as many extra shifts as possible. Thanks again.

A new hire expecting a very unexpected surprise in 9 months! HELP!
Hi everyone... I am DESPERATE for information or advice... We all know the job climate for new grads has been terrible, but I was fortunate enough to find a position at a Tenet facility and started just 2 weeks ago. ONE week after starting work I found out I was pregnant... GREAT NEWS with AWEFUL TIMING!!! I don't qualify for FMLA because I'll only have been working for the term of my pregnancy (not 12 months). We JUST signed up for benefits this week, so I also won't qualify to receive short-term disability (ahh!!). Does this mean I qualify for NO type of compensation while on leave?!???????? My husband and I just bought a new house and now I'm worried about whether we'll be able to get by financially during my recovery period. Do hospitals have their own maternity leave policies in place and compensate at all!?? I didn't think so... All I know is I'm scared about what the future holds... Any information is more than appreciated...

Ahh! New grad starting on a med/surg floor!
Hello all! I have been out of nursing school since April and will be starting my first job as an RN (oh my gosh!!!! ) on a Med/Surg floor early September. I feel ultra rusty and am wondering if any experienced nurses or recent hires know of a book that serves as a good refresher prior to heading into my med/surg position? I'm purchasing Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, but l am looking for any other recommendations! The reason I am a bit scared for September are the mere facts that my nursing school rotation in med/surg was back in April of 2008 and my recent 4-month preceptorship was in L&D. Saying I'm rusty is a bit of an understatement! Thank you everyone!!

Pearsonvue Trick Is this TRUE? Does it work every time?
I can't thank everyone enough for posting their "trick" experiences and outcomes. I don't remember who did it, but a member on page 71 actually tallied the numbers for sucess and failures... it gives me hope that the trick is in fact legitimate. I can't help but believe in it because I can't get to the CC page! Yay! Good luck to everyone... And for those of us in Cali, let's all continue to try and bear the pain! I took NCLEX today in Oakland... I'll post if the trick worked for me as soon as I find out!

The road to becoming an RNFA
Hi everyone, I'm a 2nd semester nursing student in an FNP program and I'm wondering what my best path is to becoming an RNFA? I'm considering the possibility of leaving the program early once I become an RN to pursue the RNFA track, but I'm still not exactly sure how to go about the whole thing. Every RNFA program seems to require a certain amount of experience as a first assistant/scrub nurse. How is that possible before you become one? Do you just become an OR nurse for a couple of years before you apply? ANY information would be greatly appreciated. All the research is making me crazy! Thank you in advance to anyone who replies!!

Samuel Merritt Sacramento ELMSN Jan 08'
Hey there... So I live in the bay area and there were a few reasons why I decided to go for Sac. First and foremost, I was eager to get started. More importantly though, I did believe my chances were better getting into the program if I applied to Sac. I thought about it this way... The program starts in January, so undergrads in their last year will be unable to apply to the program (because they'll still have a semester left) which virtually eliminates them from the applicant pool. The average age of the ELMSN program is something like 32, so it's unlikely that the many people from the Bay Area who want to be in the program would be willing to pack up and move their lives to Sac. Many people are settled with families and have to limit themselves to the Oakland/SF campuses because of obligations. I don't think SMC necessarily attracts people from afar... they're just starting to take tours to get their name out there. With that said I suppose I just assumed that there is larger population pursuing nursing school in the Bay Area compared to the Sac area. The pay is definitely better around here... but anyway. As for stats, I hope mine help you get an idea of what you're looking at. I graduated from UC Berkeley and had about a 3.3/3.4... somewhere around there. Then I completed three of my prerequisites post-undergrad at JC's and I got all A's. I was in the 93rd percentile for the NET and while I was living abroad in Greece I volunteered as much time as I possibly could (which wasn't very much) at nearby healthcare facilities. My time was spent at a local hospital and assisted-living facility where I essentially shadowed nurses. Compared to others, I had VERY little experience in a hospital setting and did near to nothing compared to what I heard others had done. I think the personal statement is an essential part of the degree of consideration you are given as a potential student. I believe it's really important to creatively express how passionate you are about the field, why you feel inclined to be a part of it and what qualifies you to excel in the accelerated environment. Everyone at my interview was unique and had something different to offer the program and student body. Make yourself a stand-out, I think it's critical. I'm 23 and felt very inexperienced compared to the other interviewees, but I made sure to emphasize that I was going to bring an incredible amount of excitement and enthusiasm to the program. I wish you the best of luck!!
