Samuel Merritt ABSN Fall 2019

Published

Hi everyone! Just wanted to get the conversation started for those who applied for the ABSN Fall 2019 cohort. I applied for the Sacramento location but would love to connect with all who applied in general! Good luck everyone!

Hi all. I've been another silent follower of this thread. You all helped keep me sane during the long wait. I decided to make an account just to share my stats. I was admitted on my first application and I wasn't sure I would given my GPA and HESI scores which were lower than others. But goes to show that work experience plays a big role.

Here is my info. Feel free to ask any questions. I know it's a very stressful process. I wish you all luck on your next application. You CAN do it.

HESI Score Overall: 92.8

HESI Anatomy Score: 84.0

GPA Overall: 3.45

Science GPA: 3.39

Work Experience: 1 yr work experience as a CNA

Other work experience I mentioned was as a Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant. I have my BS in Nutrition from 2015. I mentioned I also have accrued 200+ community service hours. I had three LORs: one from my work supervisor who is a nurse, another from a physician who I interned for, and one from a PhD Candidate that I did research assistance for. Lastly, I wrote a pretty personal essay explaining how working as a CNA in geriatrics has changed my perspective on life.

I wanted to share because it's important to know that grades and scores aren't everything. I was so worried that my grades and HESI scores wouldn't stack up compared to some of the stellar scores I've seen here. I think I am the only person here who has confessed to having a lower Anatomy score lol so I was definitely stressing. If you already have all your pre-reqs done but you're wondering if you should retake classes to turn your Bs into As, I would suggest that instead you focus on getting more patient contact experience.

You look like a very strong applicant!

What # were you waitlisted the last 2 times?

the first time I was 62/70 the second I was 22/27, So really bottom of the barrel on the waitlist and then finally I got in! I think they like to see people keep making their application slightly better each time. So even if you get waitlisted try and add some volunteer hours or become a CNA or EMT and I think they really like when they see you trying to better yourself. But who knows! I was shocked when I got in I assumed I would be on the waitlist but maybe at least a lower number this time.

Just curious... I've been reading different threads regarding how many people are likely to get pulled from the waitlist. I am #7. Do you think because it's fall less people are likely to decline? I'm trying to be real with myself. I've read posts where some cohorts had 20 people pulled from the wait list. I also had a friend that went from 14 to 2. What do you guys think?

I think you have a good chance. I've been told that at least 10-15 get off the waitlist. It's an expensive program so some people with options don't even make it their first choice. I actually think because it's fall, there are more people likely to get off the waitlist since other schools are admitting during this time.

If it gives anyone comfort, I have a friend that was admitted to the San Mateo cohort but is declining the offer so that frees up at least one spot off the waitlist lol. At this point we're playing the guessing game so we'll see what happens...

Hey guys, how can you see when the numbers on the waiting list goes down? I know we won’t see movement until after July 1st. Also, for those applying for financial aid... did you guys apply before you got in, or did you wait to apply after you got in? Just a curious question for the near future... if I get in.

I emailed Derric and asked. He said if you get taken off the list you will be emailed. If you want to know your spot do not ask more than once every two weeks. Im waiting until after the 4th before I ask. Figured Ive only moved a couple spots and being 8 vs 5, Im still gong to reapply

Im #8 so Im reaaally hoping you get in so that I'm really close too lol!

hey guys! I am revamping my resume and application for the July 1st deadline and was wondering if those students who were accepted could help me out. Did any of you add a career objective on your resume? I am torn because I know some schools like to have them on resumes and some do not.

Hi Lety86,

That is great that you are applying again! I was accepted to Sacramento on my first try, for which I am super grateful. I would be more than happy to you out. I did not state an objective on my resume, but personally can't imagine that will make or break your application. Let me know if you want to run your essays or resume by me.

Hello RiverDancer,

Congratulations on making into the Nursing program on your first try. I applied for San Mateo and made it unto the waiting list. I’m going to reapply for the Oakland Summer cohort. That way I can work, and have enough time to revamp my application and retake HESI. I was wondering if you can also help go over my essay etc. I want to make sure I give myself a good chance to get in next time.

@RiverDancer that would be great ! Can I have your email ? Maybe I can correspond with you via email ?
