Samuel Merritt ABSN Fall 2011

U.S.A. California

Published

I figured it was about time for a thread for this cohort, especially as we're getting close to hear back for the Nov. 2011 SF cohort. Did anyone else apply this cycle?

Sure, here are my stats:

science gpa: 4.0

last 60 gpa: 3.7

experience: worked in orphanage (shadowed nurse) in guatemala for 1 month

work in progress: none

teas: forget! Will post later! But scores were above what Samuel

Merritt wanted as posted on Their website.

Think that's it. Good luck! They must still be making calls as mine didn't come in until almost 5pm.

Specializes in NICU.

Hey everyone,

I got my phone call yesterday as well, so I figured it was time to register for the site to say hello! My call didn't come in until about 4:30, so maybe they're still working through the list.

I couldn't find the facebook page, either, by the way.

Sophia

Specializes in NICU.

Never mind - found it. :)

Scarlett and Sophia, WOW... those are some incredible stats!!

I don't really feel completely comfortable sharing my stats, since I've been accepted (I don't know if there are rules about that, so I'm gonna play it safe).

HOWEVER, I will say, I am on the much lower end of the averages... and I got in.

I think they're looking for well rounded candidates that seem probable to complete the program. I am 29 and married with no kids. My husband will be able to support me through the program, so I will not be required to work. I am done with all of the pre-reqs. I have worked a full time job since I was 18, and have consistently held a job since I was 14. I'm a hard worker, and I put myself through college - completed my BS in 2010.

I wouldn't worry too much about the scores. If it was meant to be it will be.

Has anyone gotten any sort of letter in the mail yet?

I hope that they are looking at more than grades and like Valex said, a more well rounded applicant that they believe will complete the program.

I was not accepted into the program. I have completed all prerequisites with a 3.5 GPA (1/2 my science classes through SMU). I have over 700 hrs hospital medical volunteer work (150 in a rural village abroad doing a medical mission), I have 2 years paid work experience in the medical field, my TEAS was above SM avgs, I completed 2 internships post undergrad also in healthcare, and my letters of rec came from a nurse care manager I worked for and an MD I did research for after college. I have such a strong desire to work in this career path for multiple reasons, but i'm at a loss for what I can do to improve my application. Any suggestions??

Ktke,

Wow! You have tons of experience. I can't believe you were not accepted. Did you just find out today?

Ktke - I'm really sorry to hear and totally surprised that you didn't get accepted. I know that volunteer work isn't required, but I personally feel like it shows that you know what you are getting into and have the desire to do it. Did you meet with the admissions counselors? I would do that and try again. Maybe have someone read your personal statements as well to get feedback? Good luck! I strongly believe that where there is a will, there is a way!

Thanks Oaktown, I was surprised too. I did meet with the counsler and she thought I had a good chance, but that was back in April and I know applications were still coming in. It's very discouraging though. I'll see if I can meet with them again to figure out what I may be able to do differently, although they are making themselves very difficult to get a hold of.

When I met with a counselor I just called the main line and was able to schedule it directly through them. It was a lot easier because I had previously tried to reach people directly and didn't have much luck. I don't know if you would be able to meet with EB as I imagine she is pretty busy right now but if you can meet with CA, she mentioned that she was doing the Jan round of applications.

Thanks! Will do.

Ktke- how did you find out you were not accepted into the program? Did you just find out today?
