Nurses in Texas-
Does anyone know the backstory on Sam's Law? It's a new legislative requirement that we attend specialized training on "recognizing seizures" and that the teachers who have kids with seizure disorder attend similar training. My brief look at the material indicates that this is exactly what I'm teaching in our district-required courses.
From what I read, the student without a known seizure disorder had a seizure and died. But I can't for the life of me figure out how that went unnoticed, or why a nurse or athletic trainer wasn't looped in.
HB 684 can be viewed here in its entirety:https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/30b27d_3139cafc931d4016a6aff8ab96c1c6f8.pdf
HB 684 training requirements: Sec.A38.033.A SEIZURE RECOGNITION AND RELATED FIRST AID TRAINING. “A school nurse employed by a school district must complete an agency- approved online course of instruction for school nurses regarding managing students with seizure disorders that includes information about seizure recognition and related first aid.
A school district employee, other than a school nurse, whose duties at the school include regular contact with students must complete an agency-approved online course of instruction for school personnel regarding awareness of students with seizure disorders that includes information about seizure recognition and related first aid.”
I see there are many questions about Sam and her seizure, the back story. I am Sam's mom and I would be happy to answer any questions. Please note she was never diagnosed with anything. She did die less than 3 months after her first known seizure. It was never known if a very short fall from her bed on Labor Day caused her to have a seizure or if she had experienced her first seizure and fell as a result. It was only several inches to the floor, but she hit a nightstand on her way down. No one missed anything....except the specialist we finally got in to see. Again, happy to answer any questions.

Thank you so much for visiting us. The memory of the righteous is a blessing, and you honor your daughter's memory with your work. I hope that is some comfort and consolation. Hugs to you from the NTX.
