Sam Houston State University Spring 2021

Published

Hi everyone! I decided to make a post for everyone applying at Sam Houston State University for Spring 2021. I have my TEAS in three weeks and I'm honestly really nervous.. Here are my stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.71

cumulative GPA: 3.75

And I'm trying to obtain a 90 for the reading and math section on the TEAS exam.

No, I would give it till the 15th to hear something. Others have said it usually takes 45 days from the application date.

Hey guys I received a denial email today. Just a heads up.

I’m sorry to hear that. Did they send the email to your student email or personal?

To my personal email.

I didn’t get an email today from them. Hmm.

Hi all! I was waitlisted and wanted to leave my stats here because I know future Sam Houston applicants will be combing through these threads looking for information.

My stats are below per NursingCAS:

  • Cumulative Undergraduate (B.S. in Biology from University of Houston + 2 classes at Lonestar with a 4.0 GPA there): 2.98
  • Cumulative Graduate (I earned a Master of Business Administration at UH - Victoria): 3.42
  • Overall GPA: 3.05
  • TEAS Overall: 92.0%
  • TEAS Reading (this section carries more weight): 89.4%
  • TEAS Math: 93.8%
  • 1 preference point for having a prior Bachelor's degree

My understanding is that for every 10 hours of college coursework at SHSU, you can earn up to 5 preference points (maximum 50 hours of coursework at Sam Houston State University). Thus, SHSU students have more legroom for lower GPAs and TEASs scores than transfer students do. It seems as though the order of importance in terms of statistics for this school is Nursing GPA > Overall GPA > TEAS. Preference points are added in after this initial ranking. You can also earn preference points for having a medical license (EMT, CNA), being a veteran or active duty military, and having a previous degree (all one point each).

This school is incredibly difficult to get into if your GPA isn't very high and/or you're not a Sam student. Don't give up! There are plenty of nursing programs, both ADN and BSN, in the Houston area to apply to.

For Spring 2020, they accepted 85 students and the pool of waitlisted applicants is 65. We will be told if we move up into the accepted cohort, but we don't know where we rank in the waitlist. If we don't hear anything back by early January, then our "waitlisted status ends" (denied).

Hey everyone, I was waitlisted and I am going to put my stats/tips below for the future students applying.

  • Cumulative Undergraduate GPA: 3.76
  • Overall GPA: 3. 76
  • Pre-reqs GPA courses for nursing: 4.0
  • TEAS:
    • Math- 87.5
    • Reading- 72.3
    • English- 79.2
    • Science- 80.9
  • Preference points I received: Bachelor's degree (from UH)  and CNA certified

Tips

  • Attend the information session- The admission advisors does a great job going over the application process and what to expect. They normally send powerpoints/guides to help you through the process.
  • Applicants are being evaluated based on-
    • Pre-reqs GPA/Overall GPA must be 3.0>
    • TEAS math and reading (it is crucial you score high on these two subjects b/c they score the most on it)
    • must meet overall score on the TEAS
    • the subject area scores on TEAS you must meet the minimum requirement
    • receive additional points:
      •  taking courses at SAM
      • bachelor degree
      • master degree
      • Biomedical stats MATH 1370
      • CNA, CMA, EMT, or paramedic license/certification with 6 month of experience
      • Veteran

Hey! I was accepted into the SHSU program for Spring 2021. Here are my stats for future applicants to see

  • Overall GPA: 3.62
  • Prerequisite GPA: 3.62
  • TEAS scores
    • overall: 86
    • reading: 80.9
    • math: 90.6
    • science: 80.9
    • english: 100
  • preference points:
    • I took biomedical statistics
    • I'm a Sam student, having taken all my prerequisites at Sam

Tips:

  • math and reading scores on TEAS are very important! they really want to see a competitive score on these (80+). I was a bit worried about my reading score but it ended up being okay.
  • if you are a sam student already I think you can afford to have a slightly lower TEAS and GPA, but they're still looking for competitive numbers.
  • besides numbers and stats, I think its really good to remind ourselves that nursing is so competitive and we'll all end up where we are meant to be. don't be so hard on yourself and give yourself time to breathe. we're all trying our best
  • las tip, the wait is soooo long. or at least it seems that way. they have within 45 days to tell us. for Spring 2021 the deadline was Sept. 10, and we got emails on Oct. 16. so be patient, even though waiting seems impossible. don't stress out too much

Hi, I was accepted into Sam Houston's Nursing Program for the Spring 2021 application cycle.

- Overall GPA: 3.45

- Prerequisite GPA: 3.87

TEAS Scores:

- Overall: 88%

- Reading: 95.7

- Math: 93.8

- Science: 83.0

- English: 79.2

Additional Points:

- SHSU Student

* I highly recommend putting a lot of time and effort into scoring high in the reading and math sections of the TEAS exam and retaking it if needed until you get those high scores. Don't give up! Also, try to obtain any additional points as these can help make your application more competitive.

Just wanted to update here that someone spoke to an advisor today and that they only offered 75 spots - the other 10 went to LVN to RN students. Any remaining seats will be redistributed if not all 10 seats are filled by LVN to RN students.

The average GPA for this cycle was a 3.81.

The first round of alternate emails will go out on 10/23 but have to be quick to accept their spot, so they said to keep an eye on your Sam email.

is there a group me for the Spring 2021 for the applicants that got accepted?
