Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

Hi, I have created this thread for everyone who is applying to Sam Houston State University Fall 2021. I currently take my TEAS exam a month from now. So far my GPA is still improving the goal is a 3.5 overall. I hope my test scores come out to above a B on all sections.

Hi all! I’m applying for this fall as well! I am taking my TEAS next week! I’m so nervous! I am a SHSU student!

Goodluck on your TEAS exam!

Tomorrow I have an advising appointment with advisor/ recruiter of the nursing department to hopefully answer some of my concerns!

Hi all! I was waitlisted (but did get moved off the waitlist/accepted) and wanted to share my stats here.

My stats are below per NursingCAS:

  • Cumulative Undergraduate (B.S. in Biology from University of Houston + 2 classes at Lonestar with a 4.0 GPA there): 2.98
  • Cumulative Graduate (I earned a Master of Business Administration at UH - Victoria): 3.42
  • Overall GPA: 3.05
  • TEAS Overall: 92.0%
  • TEAS Reading (this section carries more weight): 89.4%
  • TEAS Math (also a section that carries more weight): 93.8%
  • 1 preference point for having a prior Bachelor's degree

Because of the course code differences, I didn't calculate my SHSU-specific GPAs (I have a lot of transcripts and repeats). I rolled the dice and hoped for the best as part of my strategy to apply widely to a variety of schools.

My understanding from the advisors is that for every 10 hours of college coursework at SHSU, you can earn up to 5 preference points (maximum 50 hours of coursework at Sam Houston State University). Thus, SHSU students have more legroom for lower GPAs and TEASs scores than transfer students do. It seems as though the order of importance in terms of statistics for this school is Nursing GPA > Overall GPA > TEAS. Preference points are added in after this initial ranking. You can also earn preference points for having a medical license (EMT, CNA), being a veteran or active duty military, and having a previous degree (all one point each).

This school is incredibly difficult to get into if your GPA isn't very high and/or you're not a Sam student. Don't give up! There are plenty of nursing programs, both ADN and BSN, in the Houston area to apply to.

For Spring 2020, they accepted 85 students and the pool of waitlisted applicants is 65. We were told if we moved up into the accepted cohort, but we didn't know where we ranked in the waitlist. If we didn't hear anything back by early January, then our "waitlisted status ended" (denied). I ended up getting off the waitlist but declined my spot to attend TWU Houston.

If you look at the Sam Houston Spring 2021 thread, some others left their stats there as well.

Hi, thank you for sharing this information it is very useful. Do you have any other nursing schools you’d recommend to look at as well with these familiar  stats?

Hi everyone I’m applying for fall 2021 also!! I applied for Spring 2021 and was denied. I have a science GPA of 3.71, TEAS math: 90.6, TEAS reading: 72 (super low I know and they told me to fix this), overall GPA of 3.69, along with 1 bonus pint for 10 hours at Sam. However this time when I apply my GPA’s will be the same but I’ll have three bonus points for 24 hours at Sam and taking biomed stats. I plan on retaking the TEAS as well.

Are you a transfer student? Or were you already a SHSU student when you applied for Spring 2021 ?

I transferred to Sam in fall 2020 and had 12 hours there so they gave me one point for Sam hours

Hi! do you remember your stats you had for Spring 2021 when applying? To me your GPA and TEAS score for math is really good!

Not Kayla but wanted to add on about the point system here just to clarify it a little bit more.

Because bonus points are added "at the end," if Kayla and I had the same GPA and TEAS scores (we didn't but just as an example), Kayla would get a seat before I did because she would have more 3 more bonus points than me for her time at Sam Houston (3 points for doing classes at Sam + 1 point (I think) for biomedical stats at Sam). That's why transfers usually have to have better stats than Sam Houston students.

So when I applied for Spring '21 I only had 1 bonus point (I had 12 hours at SHSU at the time). My pre-req GPA was a 3.71 with an overall GPA of 3.68 or 3.69. Then for my TEAS I had a 90.6 in math and a 72.3 I believe in reading. I talked to the advisor and they said if my reading was 2-3 points higher I would have been at the bottom of the acceptance list.

But when I apply in the fall I will have three bonus points on my application; 2 points for SHSU hours and 1 point for taking MATH 1370 this semester. I highly recommend going in an scheduling an appointment with a nursing advisor before applications open and talk about your stats and what you could possibly change if possible. They will even talk to you about last semester stats but they normally stay about the same.

I talked to my advisor right after I got denied and talked to her about my stats and she said if I change just my reading score and with my new bonus points I will have a good chance if the applicant pool is similar to last semester.

Hi all I’m also planning to apply for fall 2021.

I don’t believe I’m very competitive. My cumulative GPA is 3.14, science GPA is 3.4. I’m currently taking Chemistry  so I’m hoping to bump my science GPA up a bit.  I’ve been at Sam for 2 years and have earned 55 credit hours and I’ll be graduating in July  with a bachelors in health science. I’ll be taking my TEAS in May. I really hope I have a shot at getting in. Good luck everyone!
