I am in the process of being recruited for an inpatient psych unit and I wanted to know whether the employed NP's here on allnurses are mostly salaried or hourly. The NP's in our E.R. are hourly, but they are saying my position would be salaried and I am not sure why there would be two different ways of paying an NP. Any thoughts?

Salary can be OK as long as its high and you're not taking call or engaging in other scut physicians don't want. I'm salary plus productivity.
I'm also outpatient.

Salaried employees usually this is better for the employer. Are you on a 40 hours work week? What about holidays? Sick leave? Vacation?
Who pays for: DEA number? pharmacy license, RN/NP license? CEU/CME-how many days per year & how much money for this are you alloted. It's not just base salary when you are NP.

I'm salaried and most NPs in my area are salaried unless they work per diem or contract work. However any on-call or other duties would require additional compensation. Three CEU/CME days, $1100-1500 for CME, 4-5 weeks vacation and payment for license/DEA/prescriptive is typical.

I am paid hourly as a hospital employee. This works in our favor especially since we work 12 hours days or nights, holidays, weekends, and take on-call assignments. This allows us to get overtime pay, holiday pay, weekend and shift differentials, and on-call pay. These extras add to our base pay.
There are salaried NP's in our system in other departments.

I'm salaried with productivity bonus. I also have all of my licensing fees paid for by the practice. 5 CME days, $1500 CME, 401K plus match, vacation and sick time. My week is 36 hours and I never work more than the 36 scheduled hours. It's an outpatient private practice not owned by a hospital or medical group.
Thanks for the replies! There is nothing in writing yet, that is coming up soon, but I am trying to be proactive with things. The overall package is pretty decent:3 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays, 7 days paid CME that rolls over into vac. if unused, 1500 CME credit, all fees for practice paid up front, sign on bonus etc. No call, no weekends as of now, 2 year/60 mile non compete clause (ouch). (Salary is looking to be over 6 figures, otherwise it's a no go for me). Overall not bad.
I just can't figure out why the ER would be hourly and the psych would be salary, I'll have to ask when I meet with them. Thanks for the help!

This and I like it also, good combo. I know a similar NP in the same system who is salaried and makes a touch more than me who would argue she has a preferred system. YMMV depending on your personality
