Sacramento State (CSUS) Spring 2014 applications

Published

So it looks as though we don't have a thread going as of yet for the Sac State Spring 2014 Nursing application period, so lets get one going.

My name is Sarah and I am a current Sac State student. This is my first semester at sac state as I just transferred over from Sierra College in Rocklin. I am currently in Micro, but all other pre and co reqs done. Looking at 87 points if I don't get the 3 additional for optional criteria that I submitted for. I just submitted my application today, so now the wait begins.

Specializes in Neonatal, NICU level IV.
Hello All! This is a random question, but how bad is it to get a B+? Especially in COMS... My professor accidentally miscalculated my grade and I couldn't have her change it without proof. I accidentally threw my papers away, so now I'm stuck with a B+. Everyone has been telling me to change my major because I literally don't have a chance of getting in. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?! What were your GPAs?

The average GPA for Sac State is usually around 3.85 for students who get accepted. Many people get in with a B in a class. Also keep in mind that GPA is calculated with out +/- 's when qualifying students for the program. I had a B in microbiology and I know others who had B's.

Just focus on your total points and aim for over 75 (50 GPA, 50 TEAS, 12 other). I have yet to see someone not get in with that score or higher. Hope this helps!

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. Congratulations to everyone who has gotten in so far and for all of those still waiting on an alternate spot, good luck! I got in for spring and am excited to meet you guys. I have spent the last few weeks doing vaccinations and paperwork. I only have a few things left to do. Is anyone else trying to get health insurance at the last minute? I have signed up on coveredca.com but have not gotten any info back yet. Also, do we have to choose one of the two Littmann stethoscopes that were on the CNSA equipment order forms? Or can we choose whatever we want if we are buying from somewhere else?

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hi RedHand7,

I was also confused about the stethoscopes because the equipment form said "please only purchase either a Classic II SE or Master Classic II". I ended up just ordering the Classic II SE online instead of through CNSA so I could receive it earlier for a few bucks cheaper. Did you get a chance to try on the uniforms at Folsom Hall last week? I've heard the sizes are a little different and I'm worried I'm going to order the wrong thing.

mgnursing: I'm a second semester student. I would highly recommend trying on the uniforms prior to ordering. The sizes are a bit odd. For reference, I'm 5'4" and 105 pounds and I ordered XS scrub tops and pants. They're baggy, but I prefer that for a more comfortable fit! I have the cargo pants just because I wanted the extra pocket space. (Though, I haven't actually used the leg pocket.)

I have the Classic II stethoscope, and I like it. You want a good stethoscope, and Littmann seems to be the "go to" brand. I would go with one of the two choices they give you, because those are the safe choices!

Hi Kaylab13! I know it would probably be best to try on the uniforms first, but I think last week was our last opportunity to try them on and I showed up on Friday not realizing it was the same day as the pinning ceremony. The checklist said we had until 1/24 to come in and try on uniforms, but above that it says our orders are due Monday so I'm just trying to get close to the size I need which sounds like either a SM maybe an XS ( I'm 5'5" and 120 pounds). Do you mind me asking what size lab coat you ordered?

I ordered an XXS lab coat, and the sleeves hit right at my wrists. It's also a decent length! Also keep in mind that the uniforms are unisex, so the sizing's not what you would expect. I like my XS scrubs because I can move in them. Plus, I don't have to worry about showing anything when I lift my arms or bend over! So, if you do order, and you discover that the size is a bit baggy, I wouldn't worry too much! You can exchange the pants, but not the tops.

Also, all you section 2'ers, the instructor is amazing!

Hi Mgnursing,

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. That is the part on the order form that confused me as well. At first I thought those two were our only options but then I read it later and thought it might mean "make sure you only order one of these, and not both of them" since right before it says "if purchasing a stethoscope." I will ask Terri just to clarify. The reason I am not ready to get a stethoscope is because I was thinking about using one my sister used in nursing school, which would allow me to save around 80 dollars. Unfortunately I cannot help you with the uniform sizes because I am a male and I ordered the large size of everything. I think the nursing department might be open tomorrow so I would definitely go in and try the uniforms out if you have a chance (you might want to call and see if anyone will be there first).

Kaylab13, thanks for your feedback on the stethoscopes!

Anyone else trying to get health insurance still?

RedHand7: No problem! A few of my classmates are using stethoscopes that their friends/relatives gave them (which are not Littmann). Though, I think it's a good idea to ask the SON first! Saving money is always a plus.

Anyone else trying to get health insurance still?

I don't know your situation, but you can sign up for insurance online just search google "ehealthinsurance" it is a bit pricy though. You can also get health insurance through the school, but that is even more expensive. If you are a CNSA member you can get insurance through them, but last time I checked the online application was not working. You can also go to the covered california website and go through there but in my experience this whole obama healthcare website thing is a big clusterfudge it would be nice to get a rebate though. Finally apply for Medicare though your local government agency (google). Like I said I do not know your situation, so I'm not sure what is the best option for you.

Also I assume you are transferring because you are new to the insurance thing. Have you found a place to live I am coming from Southern California and I still haven't found a place.

Good luck

Hi GeePee510,

Thanks for the info. I signed up for health insurance through covered California website (coveredca.com) already and have been waiting for over a week to get some update but have gotten nothing. I will basically be going through Medi-cal because of my income. Trying to reach someone from the coveredca.com site has been impossible. I might have to buy health insurance from wherever I can get it if I don't get this figured out within the next week or so.

Spring will actually be my second semester at Sac State but I had no idea that I would need health insurance for the nursing program. I transferred over from American River College (also in Sacramento County). I could have missed that info somewhere though and just don't remember it. I live on the northern edge of Sacramento County and drive about 14 miles to Sac State.

You can always try to check out craigslist and see if any student are looking for roommates for next year especially now that the semester has ended. Maybe you could find someone else from the nursing program that will be looking for a place to live as well. Good luck finding a place.

kaylab13,

Thank you for the sizing help with the uniforms!

RedHand7,

I didn't think the school would be open after the 20, but it ended up being open on Monday this week so I could try on the uniforms thanks for the advice!! Good luck finding your insurance I know going through the paperwork can be such a hassle especially in the short amount of time. I have United Healthcare but a friend of mine went through Medi -cal last year and was calling them back constantly to push along the process. However, she didn't get it for school so hopefully it will go better for you.

Hi Everyone,

I have a question about the textbooks we need. Has anyone used the e-books for the program? More specifically has anyone used the e-books with an android tablet? I want to make sure that they work well before I pay for them. I read a few reviews for the app that is supposed to run the books on android devices and a lot of people were not happy with how it worked. If anyone has any experience at all with the e-books for the nursing program please let me know how they work, if you found it useful, if it did not work, if you would recommend e-books or physical textbooks, etc.

Thanks!
