sack s baby??

A friend of my husband's says her dgtr went for an ultrasound today and saw the sack with no baby. She is supposed to be 6 wks along. Can this happen? Her mother thinks she has had an abortion and is trying to come up with a reason as to why the baby is no longer there

It certainly is possible with many options: probably a blighted ovum where implantation didn't occur correctly.

Another possibility is the presence of a "psuedo-sac", which can occur with an ectopic pregnancy.

In any case, she needs prompt follow-up with her OB/GYN or CNM.

I'm sorry to hear that there is such mistrust between mother and daughter as to raise suspicions of an abortion when the young lady probably is in need of emotional support from her family.

yep was gonna say pseudo sac....i have had two ectopics...this happened to me. FOLLOW UP is all I can say. Do NOT let it go.

An empty sac is VERY common. She is not hiding anything.

Thank you guys for your answers, As I said the mother is a friend of my husband's and asked him to ask me, never mind that I am a LTC nurse, don't do much with babies there :chuckle I'm not real sure what their situation is, but there is a lot of mistrust. ie: she thinks she might have got married and just isn't telling her, I will pass the info along. I thought I had learned that this could happen, but wasn't sure and didn't remember what could cause it, etc. Thanks again :)

This happened to me during my first pregnancy. I was having minor bleeding so they kept telling me to get off my feet. This went on until 9 1/2 weeks when bleeding got heavier. When i went to emergency room, ultrasound showed sac but no baby. They said it happens. Doctor gave me option between DNC and some pills that I think were called methedone( maybe, been a long time). Just basically made me miscarry which was slowly happening anyway. 7 months later got pregnant again and had minor bleeding again and got scared but everything turned out fine and now my first child is 5.

Sounds like a blighted ovum but all the answers above are great. So sorry for all that your friend is going through.

quiby - the med was probably methotrexate.
