Nursing Students Student Assist

Hello

I'm soon entering my clinical preceptorship, and we are required to makeup SMART goals throughout the experience. I'm in oncology BTW.. Any ideas

What would you like to learn, accomplish, or experience by the end of your preceptorship?

Well the T part is pretty straight forward.

Many students want to polish their assessment skills, are there any there any that came up in clinicals that you got feedback on, or want to improve? Oncology has so many dimensions to it: nursing interventions, pain and nausea control, therapeutic conversations, meds and chemo, not to mention time management, self care.

But really, what do you want to achieve?

Thanks for the suggestions. My first goal is actually on time management, and gradually increasing pt load. The thing with chemo is that were not allowed to hang up as students.. pain and nausea seems more like a specific goal for a pt care plan rather than a general goal for preceptorship.

I get stuck on making goals measurable..

Make task-oriented goals that are measured by the number of times you perform them. I.e. Succcessfully access 3 ports on first attempt by end of preceptorship. Independently prepare IV tubing set up for primary and secondary fluids twice by week 6 of preceptorship.

Does that help?

I did mention skills, however it is task oriented.. I also mentioned that I'd like to learn a certain number of new skills by the end..I could have a better understand of diabetes management but can't make the goal measurable..

In my state you are not allowed to access ports as a student. I had to learn to do it on the job.

These are examples to help the OP think of and format goals. OP should obviously choose goals that are within his/her scope as a student.

Be specific about the skills you want to learn. That you could measure. Also, goals are not always met. It is possible that you want to observe or practice a skill and for some reason you aren't able to. For my students, an unmet goal is acceptable. Be specific about what you want to learn. Such as, I will be able to state the usual dose range for morphine, the various routes of administration and 5 side effects in one week. I will be able to list 3 nursing interventions for the treatment of nausea in 2 weeks.
