Haven't traveled for almost 7 years. Am contemplating a return. Don't want to do the extensive move every thirteen weeks thing I did in 1990's and am thinking I want to purchase a "Toy Hauler" to bring my garage and toy's with me. I know the price of fuel will almost equal the cost of the vehicle per year but I just remember how much I hated to pack and unpack with every new assignment. I know some who travel with a suitcase, a plate, fork, spoon and some bed linens but I just can't. I even shipped my Kitchen stuff to Hawaii when I did that assignment. What's it like out there now?

Ask if there are other travelers at the hospital you may talk with. There may be a wealth of information to be shared. So many others travel in RV's and may share the location of parks, good and not so good ones and help you map your own "travel, locate plan.

Hello all,

Thanks for keeping this post going. Been here a few weeks now and really enjoy having the RV. Walk in and it feels like home. Will change a few things when I get my own and have been looking. Anyone have an idea on how I can thank my brother and his family for allowing me to use their Toyhauler?

Work has been good, got some experience with Robotic Surgery and have been doing more off pump CABG than I've done before. It's great getting new experiences. The crew here is very nice and I may stay longer than I initially planned. Don't want to spend the Summer in South Florida though. Weather so far has been nice. Not too many hot days. For me anything over 75 is too hot.

Other than being very hard to find, the RV Hideaway is a fine place to park. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet secluded area. It is on the approach to Fort Lauderdale airport, so if planes flying overhead bother you maybe you might want to pass. Was able to get the 40 foot toyhauler in place, but if you have something smaller it might be better. No pull throughs here. There are some nice County parks in the area will put my name on the list before I leave in the spring. My daughter likes them with the playground right there.

Happy New Year

Hi Rod,

Glad you got settled and found a place. If you have children with you have you checked out TY park and or Markham park. TY has a water park with slides for next year (unless its closed in the winter) and I see pretty good size campers there. Markhas park has shooting range, bike trails and hiking, and I think a pool now.

Anyway, good luck at Holycross.

hi, my husband and i have been traveling for a year now and we have had a great time. we live in our 40' diesel pusher and the great thing about is that you can't buy a lot of stuff, there's no room. we get our housing in my hourly wages so that our taxes are paid as income since we don't have a permanent home. i have met other travelers, husband and wife teams that travel together. they just can't work in the same unit. the biggest problem we have encountered is that camping areas are usually full by the time we get an assignment. we got the last monthly site in ft. myers and we have to rent weekly on our next assignment in seattle. if you want to go to an area that has peak seasons, like florida in the winter, it can be difficult to find a camping spot.

so...am i understanding correctly. if i sell my home before traveling, i will not get the tax benefit of traveling in an rv? i own a home in fla, but it is rented, will this be considered my permanent home or do they go by the address you are using? everyone is so informative on this thread....i love it!!

I am not a tax professional, and try to read all the rules when I complete my taxes using one of the computer tax programs. The last information I had stipulated that you were forced to maintain two households and significant miles were traveled between those locations. If you rent out one of the homes, then I do not believe it can be claimed as a residence. You also will have to claim the income from the rent. One of the things I will be checking out soon, is where to have the main home for the best tax benefits. There are some who say North Dakota, others Texas and some Florida. Don't know the best source. Hope that helped and I encourage you to contact a tax professional.

We have checked into http://www.escapees.com/index2.asp They provide many services for fulltimers. We currently still own our home but have met people who have been happy with this group and became Texas residents.

I'm just going from gut feeling here and a few things I've read, but wouldn't Texas be the best state to be from if:

You're a traveler with:

1) a permanent tax home in Texas - not just permanent home but tax home

2) Texas has no state income tax and therefore you'd always pay the least amount of state tax payable

3) Texas is a compact state - holding a Texas license because it's your permanent home aloows you to work in all the compact states - very convenient

4) and it's Texas - just like a whole 'nother country

unfortunately for me - I'm not from Texas, all hat no cattle folks. So move along!

HI,

I haven't posted since Aug 07.

My husband and I are now traveling and living out of our travel trailer. It's presented some challenges, but the ups are outweighing the downs.

For tax purposes we had to maintain our home, and have someone living in it, not renting.

This was not a problem for us since our youngest still lives at home.

My husband and I am considering taking our 36' fifth wheel to CA- Sonoma Valley area. Anyone know of a good rv park? Thanks for any help to this area.

It's 3AM and I am making preparations to depart the heat and humidity of South Florida, before it starts. I must say this winter has been one of the best. Not too hot, low humidity and just a little rain. My first assignment using an RV was better than I expected. I owe my Brother and Sister-in-law a lot, allowing me to use their "Toy-hauler" to test out travel nursing in an RV. I will have my own soon.

TY park in Hollywood, FL. was the best place I stayed during my assignment. It's a Broward County park and with persistence I was able to secure a spot for the last couple months of my 4 month stay. The RV park with nice pull thru's (a must for the toy-hauler), and the bike/walking path was very enjoyable while doing laundry or just spending an evening outside. Why they put the RV part so close to the railroad tracks is beyond me but after one night of hearing all the trains that passed by, I hardly heard any more. I first started out in a small park called RV Hideaway. It is off the beaten path and very difficult to find. The full time residents are a friendly bunch and the only reason I didn't stay there for the entire time was the inability to use my garage for the motorcycle. I am currently at Palm Beach Gardens RV in Northern Palm Beach county. Have stayed for the past weekend and other than the manager, who isn't a people person, it's been OK. Would consider staying next year if I can get an assignment close by.

Not looking forward to the fuel bill for my trip back to the Midwest. $4.19 per gallon when I filled on Thursday. Did get almost 11 mpg pulling the trailer on a windy day, so I hope that keeps up or gets a little better. Have decided that if there is a Strong head wind I will pull off the road and wait for the wind to diminish or for it to turn to a tailwind. Will also keep the engine at it's peak rpm for the best fuel mileage.

Am looking for my next assignment, have some leads but nothing concrete yet. Don't know where I will end up. Didn't plan on taking a summer assignment but will make the best of it. Check my other posts for an update on that. Happy travels,

Rod

My retired husband and I ended up in Placerville, CA, staying at an RV park called American River Resort. about 10 miles away in Coloma,CA. It is gorgeous and our campsite is about 100 yds from the river. We went river rafting Sunday and had a blast. The hospital is Marshall Hospital and it is not owned by one of the big guys, therefore everyone is happy. 5:1 nurse/patient ratio, staff very friendly to me. It is my first traveling experience and I'm afraid I won't find this sort of friendliness anywhere else now! We are 2 hours from San Francisco, 1 hr from Lake Tahoe. Lots of little shops, bars, quaint little places on the main street in Placerville. We are thinking about going to somewhere on the coast in CA in Oct/nov- anyone been to Santa Barbara? I doubt if there are any RV parks there but maybe close by?? Oh, this RV park is beautiful- lots of room between sites, BUT, the electricity needs some work- may not be able to use our air cond. and there is not a laundry facility here. Very much worth it to us though b/c of the natural beauty all around us. LOVE living in our 5th wheel.

I read this entire thread and at the end of it, someone travels to my childhood home town of Placerville and Coloma (lived in both as a kid in the early 1980's....) so funny. I am a year away from graduating BSN. I would just love to go back to Placerville/Coloma to work and check everything out. I bet a lot has changed, and I bet a lot hasn't.. heheh... Tahoe is great. I am sure you have been to Gold Bug Mine and The Sawmill already... Check out Strawberry (there was a good country restaurant there as I recall) half way towards Tahoe on HWY49. Also, Sly Park Lake is nice towards Auburn and Somerset.. Sacramento has some interesting sights and places, Old Sac and the Railroad Museum... I gotta go back and see everything again... Travel nursing sounds so cool. Now if I can just convince the little lady to hold off on kids for a little longer..:wink2:
