Rutgers (formerly UMDNJ) ABSN Spring 2014

Published

New member here. Just got my acceptance letter in the mail today (Newark campus). Thought I'd start a thread to get the conversation flowing. Anybody else waiting?

I'm still waiting on mine for Stratford! I am getting nervous, but no news is good news, right? I've been accepted to Drexel, Villanova and Misericordia, but this is my dream school, so hopefully I find out sooner rather than later. :)

Congrats on getting in!! I'm applying for their part time program for summer 2014. If you don't mind me asking what were your gpa, pre req gpa, and did you have any medical experience when you applied? I'm submitting my application in December and honestly I'm terrified lol.

thanks! my undergrad GPA was a 3.3, pre-req GPA was a 3.8 or something close. NursingCAS does some weird stuff to your grades, so its difficult to say what grades they looked at specifically. Not sure if it mattered, but I graduated from Rutgers, so admission committee was aware of how RU calculated GPA. Medical experience? I volunteered at a women's health clinic and have had papers published. Not sure if that really helped my admission, but overall I'd say they got back to us really quickly. They've already updated their requirements for the program since the merge, have you seen it?

Best of luck to everyone who is still waiting!

i just received my acceptance letter as well. can't wait to get started

mno's_mommy did you get your acceptance letter for Newark? I keep emailing Jacklyn about Stratford, but I don't think they're even started looking at those. I need to know what is going on because if I don't get accepted, I need to have my deposit to Drexel by 10.15. Is there anyone else who is trying to get into the Stratford program?

I got in too! I'm SO excited but also SO nervous! What is your first bachelor's degree in? Also, how far are you commuting from??

i will be attending newark. my commute is about twenty mins without traffic (parsippany). i have some friends who recently graduated from this program and they loved it. my first degree was in communications.

woohoo! excited to meet you all. academic calendar has orientation for December 5. are you guys doing anything to prep?

My undergrad was also in communications. As far as prep, I've been hearing a lot about nalc or nacl? I've heard it is VERY beneficial and gets you in the right state of mind....I saw a wonderful (but a bit intimidating) post of a current student in the program and it gave good tips..I"ll find it and post it

Here is the comment I saw that had good insight.....

Hey all

I'm a level 1 at Stratford. Everything Mike said is true - INTENSE. Some advice I wish I had been given in the months I was waiting for the program to start:

1) Brush up on your A&P - mechanisms and regulations of fluid, cardiac system, renal system, etc. Know it all - you will be using it.

2) Take the NALC class. It helps so much with the med math and terminology and makes you aware of your strengths and weaknesses

3) get your books early and read at least the first 5 chapters for each class. When our syllabi was posted for the starting week, we had less than a week to read about 5 chapters for each class. Be prepared! You will always be reading!!

4) register your books with Lippincott on their The Point site. Start doing the practice tests, etc.

5) If you already had a Health Promotion, Research, and/or Policy class (these are levels 1, 2, and 3) classes then do a request transfer credit. I didn't know about this and now I spend 3 hours each Wednesday sitting through a health promotion class that I took in my undergrad. I just got out of my Research class for level two and I'm starting to fill out the paperwork for level 3 for policy. You will need this extra time to study or catch up on sleep.

6) if you are a procrastinator, think about changing your ways. Seriously, there is an exam each week in level one - covering 5-8 chapters. While you are preparing for that exam you still need to read the several chapters for the other classes and do papers, etc.

7) The effects of the merger with Rutgers really haven't been seen by us yet other than we now wear black scrub pants instead of white at the hospital clinical.

8) Enjoy your summer because starting in September your life as you know it will drastically change. It's not horrible - but you must be willing to make sacrifices and put school first.

9) The instructors at Stratford are all very nice. I am learning a lot and I'm amazed at what I have accomplished just shy of 2 months. This is a hard program but there are resources available to help you succeed but you need to put in the effort and time.

Good luck to you all!!
