RPN's into the intensive care unit

Hello to all,

I am heading a new research project on introducing RPN's into the intensive care unit of our hospital. I was wondering how many RPN's have worked in the unit or are currently working in an ICU. I am from Canada, so I think that the scope of practice differs from the US, but I was wondering if you could tell me what your job duties are, and how it has affected the ICU, positively or negatively in your opinions, having RPN's and RN's working together. Suggestions for ideas and or changes are welcome as well. Thanks all for your time!:D

There are very few LPNs working in American ICUs due to scope of practice issues.

Have you been in touch with the health authority in Calgary? They have had LPNs working in their ICU's for the last couple of years. It's been a win/win for all involved.

Hi, I am an RPN and I have worked in an ICU. I think that the R.N.'s liked having the help, they always knew that I would not overstep my scope of practice, and since I have medical training and a nursing license to up hold, they knew that I was responsible for my actions and they didn't need to explain everything that they were doing. I never took a patient load...just helped the R.N.'s. I used to take care of patients who were on chronic ventilators...so I did not feel uncomfortable at all. It was the best nursing job that I've had. I worked in Ontario
