RPN George Brown Fall 2016

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi everyone! I just found out yesterday that I got accepted to the RPN program at George Brown for this fall. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there who got accepted? :) I'm really nervous!

I actually didn't find anatomy that bad. It's almost all straight memorization. But make sure you attend every class. I know they always say that, but it's true for sure for anatomy. And when you get to study the models make sure you really take the time. You have to do a bell-ringer at the end of the semester where you go to something like 18 different stations and you'll be asked what this part of the heart is or that part of the brain. It's a bit stressful but as long as you prepare it's not super hard.

Hi NewRPN85! I have a question in regards to shoes and stethoscopes. Does GBC have shoes that you must purchase ? Certain brand or make? Or can you purchase any white shoe? I saw on the gbc website that you can purchase a stethoscope from them for 90+ $. Are you required to purchase that one, or are you allowed to purchase any kind you'd like? Thankyou.

You can buy any white shoe. I've had plenty of nurses look at me funny because I actually went out and bought white shoes. Where I trained almost no-one wore them and where I work I can't think of anyone that actually wears them. My advice to you is to buy the most comfortable shoes you can find at the absolute lowest price. You're Probably going to get a lot of stuff excreted, spilled or projected at you. You don't want to spend too much on shoes.

As for the stethoscope, you should be given one. I seem to recall being given a voucher for the GBC store that is good for one set of scrubs and you get a nursing kit that includes a stethoscope, a few pen lights, a reflex hammer and maybe something else. They also give you a box of gloves. Which was a bit odd considering every single health care facility I stepped into gave us as many pairs as we needed.

Hey Amy, have you gone to an information session yet? If not, when do you plan on going? I think I am going on April 20th.

I have not been to an information session. I am still deciding if I am going to go to one because I live in the Halton region, and I would have to miss school.

Side note: Would you be interested in doing the CPR/HCP certification together later on in the year? Feel free to say no or if you have other plans.

If you want to contact me outside of allnurses, my personal email is amyburton345 at gmail dot com .

I think things have changed since NewRPN85 was there, a little. Actually things change every semester it seems. They do not give you a stethoscope though I'm sure it's available for purchase in the bookstore. True, any white shoes will do, but do NOT buy mesh. Not only will the lab instructors frown upon it, but some placements simply don't allow it.

If it helps, I never went to an information session (though I've been on a panel for this purpose at GBC!). Feel free to ask questions!

Hahaha man that's pretty cheap of them. My first semester of the RPN program was at the St.James campus then we moved to the Waterfront. I have no doubt that things have changed. But I still find it funny that they want you to buy your own instead of including a stethoscope.

Fortunately this is news, that they used to, haha. Though I guess it gives you wiggle room in terms of preference. They sort of give you a giant goodie bag of lab materials (my apartment is full of catheters and dressing trays) but it is certainly included in your tuition.

Hi Amy.burton and Lisa stone,

i got accepted into Rpn for winter 17. seeing that you guys are ahead of me I'm just wondering how was your first semester at GBC? I know it's 9 courses first semester , how did you manage. Are any advise you can offer me for my semester starting January 17?

or anyone one for that matter ?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Congratulations!

Semester 1 isn't a problem. I honestly think the students would be better off if it were more challenging because semester 2 is a bit of a shock for most. It all boils down to time management and accepting you're not going to have a ton of spare time for the next two years. Travel now. ;) Stay engaged. Attend learning sessions. Semester 1 is kind of a practice round...things get real later.

Thank you so much for your response , I can't wait to see the schedule to know how much day I will be attending class. I'm super nervous and I know it going to be a challenge with time.

Btw I already except I will be all school and little or no fun time. Lol which is fine by me I can have fun during summer or when I'm done school.

hi Carebearnurse90,

I have been also accepted for George brown rpn program winter 2017, i'm also really worried about 1st semester 9 subjects! but i have a curiosity regarding schedule of semesters, like is that possible to study continuously 16 month? which i already got answer is 'no' then when will be 4 month break? right after 1st semester or 1st year? or we gonna have 8 month break total in 2 years? what i'm gonna do at that time? i wish i would get offer from sheridan, it has 16 month continuously semester program....
