Roll Call Hillsborough community college Spring 2012 Nursing

Published

I havent found any threads on the Spring 2012 Nursing program, soo i figured id start one! I have already recieved an Email saying everything has been recieved, just waiting on my letter to see if I was accepted! Does anyone know when theyll be sent out? Has anyone recieved that email yet? :redpinkhe

Hey guys, I was looking on web advisor at the NP1 class for plant city and it says that the course is already closed :/ Idk what that means. I did not want to sign up for anything or register until I went to the orientation to find out more about it because there is only One NP1 class to register for !

Hi Kjbrown101, the course is closed bc we can't register until they tell us too in orientation... So, don't worry... Hope that helps

Weww thank you (: the last that i looked at the course it was open so i kinda freaked out when i looked!

Thank you very much! See you guys are orientation. !!:grad:

here is the info i received about the wings program:

i am currently taking applications for wings assistance but only for the spring waiting list. your acceptance would be determined by if you are getting pell grant from financial aid and i already know you are in a technical program. i am currently at capacity so depending on how many students graduate or drop out will determine who i can accept for spring 2012. assistance is available by textbook vouchers, tuition vouchers and childcare assistance.

so, it seems simple enough, fill out and turn in the app on the website and then hope that enough people graduate.

orientation almost here! squeeeeeeee! going to tape a sign to my back that says rnntrainng :-p can't wait to see you all in person!

for those of you assigned to dm campus, what, if anything, have you heard about choosing clinical locations? i know the locations are st.josephs, university community (now florida hospital) and tampa general. i've been told my someone who just graduated from the program in may to "stay away from uch, tampa general is good..but a biotch to travel to as we have to park somewhere downtown and then take a tram or something ( i don't remember her specific words), and st.josephs is the the all around best" but here are my thoughts, let me know if this makes sense...

1. uch-i'm not sure why i've been told to stay away from it..but it seems to me that as it is a small hospital, the clinicals might be a bit easier and not as varied? so, therefore you might not learn as much as you would somewhere else...but, your day might not be as difficult and stressful as a major trauma center like tgh.

which brings me to #2. tgh. tgh is essentially the opposite of uch, large and intense. because it is a major trauma center, i would expect that we would see everything here, which can only be good for us as it might teach us a lot more than just the basics. seems that doing clinicals at tgh would be like a trial by fire...if we can handle tgh, we can handle anything. however, this also means that there is the possibility that we couldnt' handle it...at least in my way of thinking. what if we get there and it is overwhelming, what if slow and steady happens to be more your pace than intense and chock full of things that we have never experienced before..such as gunshot wounds, tgh specialized in gunshot wounds, so i am pretty sure that at some point in time we would come across it...and that is a bit scary in my book (cool...but scary)

3. st.joes....a good hospital with a good reputation...big, but not like tgh. i would think it is kinda middle of the road when compared to uch and tgh. christian, so if that is your faith, a positive. i really don't know a whole lot about st.joes....

so any thoughts on the above...do my suppositions make sense? i'm so afraid of choosing the wrong location..once you choose it...that is your life for two years, so it is, to my way of thinking, a very big decision to make.

I have done clinicals at UCH and it was not a bad experience. But then again, i have not had any experience at any other place. But I can tell the TGH would be a better more up beat place for learning and such. Also, people might actually want to teach you and shadow you there. I was fortunate enough to get a teacher who let me get hands on with everything. Then she did not work one of those days and I did not get such a good teacher. So maybe the level of teaching and mentoring will be a lot better at TGH than that of UCH.

ps. Orientation next weekkkk (:

Hi everyone, I haven't been on in awhile but since orientation is coming up next week I thought I'd check the board to see what's happening. I'm DM nights and weekends. As far as choosing clinical sites, from reading some of the other boards for people already in the program it looks like your teacher will email you a couple weeks after orientation to get your preference for your clinical site, so make sure to keep an eye on your email account. I've never worked in the medical field so I can't give you an opinion on these hospitals in that sense but I have been to both UCH and St. Joe's alot. I've been to the UCH emergency dept a few times and every time the wait was short and it seemed to be kinda slow. So it would probably be an easier place to do clinicals but I don't think you will learn as much. I've been to the ER at St. Joe's a few times and it was a long wait and the atmosphere seemed pretty hectic. On the other hand, I've had 7 surgeries at St. Joe's over the past 3 years or so. Most of them were same-day surgery and a few of them I was actually admitted. Every single one of them was a pleasant experience (besides the whole surgery part). Every staff member I encountered was super nice and didn't get annoyed at all when I would ask medical questions because I had a goal to become a nurse. I've been to hospitals before where I said I was in pain and the nurse told me to stop being a baby and suck it up. So I definitely appreciate a kind, understanding nurse and it's one of the reasons why I want to get into this profession so I can give back. I am defininitely requesting St. Joe's for my clinical site. Heck I've been there so many times some of the nurses will probably remember me...lol. I just feel that I would learn the most from the nurses at St. Joe's and they would be the most welcoming. Not to mention it's only 2 minutes from my house!

If they will let us pick the Hospital, I will go with TGH. I work in one of their clinics already, so it will be easier for me. They have electronic medical records that I already know how to use. Though it's true that the parking is off site.:scrying:

can anyone give me more info on what types of tops/shoes/pants we need? i cannot go back and read through all these pages lol! is it a while polo or what type of white shirt? can the pants be capris or long or what? just white tennis shoes (all over white)? any help would be much appreciated as well as colors and such. i am almost positive its white top and wine bottoms? btw, i know i am a procrastinator, but just did my background check today! it was very painless. when do we do the drug test? orientation?

Hi becky rules, yeah I posted all that stuff on previous post LOL but I don't mind letting you know.... We have to wear white (scrub tops) and Wine (scrub pants) not capris (unfortunately because we will be dealing with different types of fluids I would speculate) So no to the capri lol... We have to wear white shoes with no wholes in them ( again because of fluids)... My friend has advised me that we do a surprise drug test in orientation. Don't forget everyone orientation is on Wednesday 11/09 and Thursday 11/10 from 8:30am-4:00pm just incase you misplaced your paperwork! I hope this helps becky rules... Have a great weekend... I will be on here all weekend... (because I am addicted) Sad but true LOL

Wednesday is creeping up on us!!!! :yeah:

I can't wait to get all the information, and to get started on our road to those 2 little letters! (i'm excited can you tell?)

I was thinking about clinicals, and I was thinking it would be good to be at TGH, because of the diversity in cases. I do hope we all get good teachers. There are nursing schools that come through and do their clinicals where I work, and I'm super nice, and explain everything because I know that one day (SOON!!!!!) I'll have to be in that same position, and I want someone to treat me well. So, I'm putting the good karma out, so I can (hopefully) reap some good karma back. (most of the time)

thanks for the info! by the way, i love that you changed my name to becky RULES, much better than becky RUDES :)
