Bea- I was talking about the hand-held computer thing :) Some schools require their students carry one on them bc they can store a planner and medical software on it.
But I think you will be fine with your girls. It will definitely be an adjustment, but like you said if you have a loving, supportive network it becomes that much easier. A good friend of mine is halfway through and she has a 3 yr old. She seems to be making it all work. Just look at the bigger picture; 2 yrs may seem like forever, but in the end it will have flown by and we will have created better lifestyles for our families :heartbeat
Bea, Corky is right. If you have a supportive network, you will be fine. I know a lot of nursing students with kids. I have a friend who has four kids and another who has 3. Both of them have infants, so it is challenging for them. I don't know how they make things work, but they do, and they are both great students. You will be fine, and you will be a great role model for your children.
There are many good stethoscopes to choose from. I love my Littmann Classic II S.E. I think that any of the Littmanns and Ultrascopes are great, but there are some good stethoscopes that are less expensive. A lot of students use the Prestige stethoscopes, and they like them. I had a Prestige clear sound, and I honestly couldn't hear that well, but I can hear through the other Prestige stethoscopes. I gave the Prestige clear sound to a friend of mine, and she likes it better than her Littmann, so go figure. Stethoscopes are a matter of debate since everybody is different. You may want to try a few at one of your local uniform shops to see how they work for you. No matter
what, though, I am still partial to my Littmann :heartbeat.
As for the shoes, you can get tennis shoes as long as they are all white and don't have a colored logo on them. I see a lot of students with Nikes, New Balance, etc., etc.. You can't have a red, blue, black, etc. name or anything on the shoes, though. Also, the shoes have to be closed, so no clogs, crocs, etc.. Get a shoe that is comfortable for you since you will be on your feet a lot at clinicals. If you are more comfortable in tennis shoes, get those.
Good luck to you!
Thanks so much Heloisea! I'm sure we are all equally exited, nervous, impatient, you name it!Tell me, what supplies will we need besides steth, nurse kit, etc? Will we need a PDA?
TIA! :redpinkhe
I don't think you'll need a PDA. It was recommended to me not to get one. You have to know what you're looking up with a PDA, with drugs it would probably be alright. But with other books, like the Tabers, I was able to scan the book for info I needed. If I had the PDA version, it would have made it harder to look up what I needed in terms of nursing diagnoses to use with care plans.
Congrats to all of you that will be new SNs (student nurses) in January 2009! Welcome to the nursing program at TCC.
I am about to finish my first semester of NS (nursing school), and I'm so excited for y'all!!! Your life will never be the same. NS is extremely difficult but ENTIRELY worth it!!!
Enjoy your holidays, and congrats again!

P.S. When you are talking about a PDA, you are talking about the book and not the computer thing, right?
