I'm happy for all of you who will be starting in the spring. I would like to welcome all of you to the nursing program. If you have any questions about anything - schedules, clinicals, professors, the classes, tips for making it through the first semester, etc., feel free to ask. I'll be happy to help you out or answer any questions if if I can. I'm sure that all of you will feel pretty overwhelmed after orientation and during the first 3-4 weeks of school, but the time will go by so fast. Be proud of yourselves for getting in, and get plenty of rest and relaxation over the holidays. :nuke:

Thanks so much Heloisea! I'm sure we are all equally exited, nervous, impatient, you name it!

Tell me, what supplies will we need besides steth, nurse kit, etc? Will we need a PDA?

TIA! :redpinkhe

Hi! We were not required to have a PDA, but I know they have talked about requiring them at some point, so I'm not sure if you will need one or not. I know a few people have them, and I guess they use them, but most of the people that I have had clinicals with have not had them. In addition to your uniform, you will need a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, pen light, and nurse kit. There were a few other things that I found really helpful. I have used my clipboard that you can carry stuff in at every clinical. You can get them at Walmart. I keep my papers, pens, pencils, pen light, etc. in it. A rolling book bag is necessary if you want to save your back, especially during the first two semesters of nursing school. That Kozier book is heavy, especially when it is packed in with other books. Also, a book called Nursing Fundamentals: Reviews and Rationales put out by Prentice Hall and the Saunders NCLEX book helped so much with our nursing exams. I don't know if I would have passed my tests that first semester without them. Both of them are available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, etc.. Anyway, I hope this helps.

p.s. I forgot to mention that they have now put videos of the skills for the skills check-offs online. I think this would be really helpful. Unfortunately, we didn't have this when I started. Also, I was surprised that they have some really helpful nursing videos on youtube as well as some funny stuff of nursing students goofing around.:wink2:

p.s.s. Did I mention that chocolate, funyuns, and Diet Coke to counteract them have been really helpful as well? :yeah:

:yeah:wow congratulations to everyone who got in! i am so happy for ya'll! like heloisea, i also graduated from there, so i can help with questions, teachers, clinicals, etc also. i would encourage you to get a planner...it will help with every assignment, clinical, test date etc. also the 1st semester, skills is only a 1 credit hour class, but the work you put in for that class will seem like 4 credit hours if not more. use the skills lab, and practice practice practice for the performance check offs. and yes, look at the skills videos on tcc's nursing webpage, you will do the same check offs during skills. i agree with heloisea, i would invest in used or new nclex review books, and brush up on dosage calculations. if you do a search on this website, you will find many that list the different conversions you must need to know for every semester. for textbooks, also check craigslist to see if there are any listed there that may be of use to you.

i miss those nursing school days, and especially that taco casa place near the campus. we had so many study sessions there before tests...

well enjoy your orientation and 1st semester, it may seem overwhelming at times, but remember you can and you will get through it! :)

luckygurl :heartbeat

you guys are so awesome- thanks for your willingness to help!

Heloisea and Luckygurl, thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions. That's very comforting. The first thing I did was get a planner, but I'm weird like that. :) I'm anxious and nervous and excited all at the same time! I know I can handle the school part of it, but I'm worried about juggling my family with school. I have a very supportive husband and network of friends, so I know my girls will be well taken care of. Plus my mother-in-law is an RN and went to school when my husband was young, so he knows what's involved. I've just been here since my girls were born and I'm going to miss them so much. I know my oldest will understand and she's very excited for me, but my youngest is going to have trouble, I think. My girls are 9 and 5. I just have to keep in mind that this is for them as much as for me and that in two years our lives will be so much better. It's been such a huge sacrifice financially for me to stay home and finish school. Sorry to dump all that on you, that's just my biggest worry.

Anyway, back to the questions: Is there a brand of steth that you prefer or are better than others, etc? Also when it says "white leather shoes" can we just wear solid white tennis shoes or does it have to be some sort of special shoe?

Thanks again for all the info!!
