I just joined this site in May, after I got my letter for NS. I was just wondering how many people out there are attending Roane State's Nursing Program?
So, I've heard that at our 2nd orientation that they are going to give us 7 chapters to read over the weekend before classes start on monday. has anyone else heard this? or know what chapters/book it will be? i know i have to work all that weekend, so i'm kinda stressing.haha. YaY for nursing school!
Just wait until Orientation to see if that is true, if they assign chapters just skim over them so you have an idea what the teacher is talking about. Plus, you can figure out questions you have before class. They will not quiz you or give you a test on the first day so deep reading is not necessary yet, relax...it will be fine!
Thanks to the replies! I received a letter notifying of a Nursing prep class in Oak Ridge before the semester actually starts...it is on the 8th...I am hoping to gain a better perspective on things then...do you remember doing this?
Also, I was wondering if any of you could offer up some advice as to some suggestions....is it better to try to learn things on your own (lecture) or to pay more attention to what is being taught in class?
They are both good. You need to pay attention to lecture, but realize that anything in the assigned chapters is fair game for a test question and the teachers cannot lecture on all the material...it would take forever, so some of nursing is self taught. The med math is that way too. They show you the formulas and you choose the one that works best for you and practice! The nurse prep class is fun if it is the same as the one we went to. the lady who teaches it is very nice and will answer lots of questions for you...however if she tells you to wear your white scrubs to orientation, that is not true, you don't need them for anything but clinicals.
The Nursing prep class was okay....I learned a couple of things...I felt a bit overwhelmed by all of the health professionals who will be taking nursing also....I feel a bit intimitated! And of course, hearing about how much reading and studying will be expected....and the pass or fail math test....this particular instructor also said she loves pop quizzes...so let the games begin....bring on the nerves!!
One more thing....me and another friend would love to have a study group in the lenoir city area (where we live) and we will be carpooling also...if anyone wants to consider joining us...
Pop quizzes? Interesting..is this an Oak Ridge Instructor? I never had one of them give a pop quiz. As far as the health professionals with you in class, unless they are LPNs you will all be equal by the end of 1st semester. Lab folks tend to do better on the math, but overall even CNAs only know a little more than folks with no med experience. We even had an MA last year and they didn't make it past middle of 2nd semester (probably because they thought they knew more than they did). It will be okay if you are dedicated...trust me, if I can do this anyone can!:chuckle

beth66335....the lady is a clinical instructor who also may teach Pharmacology in Harriman...it hasn't been decided yet...they are looking for someone if I understood her correctly.
Also, would you be so kind as to look back at your 1st year; 1st semester syllabus and see what 7 chapters we are supposed to read? We asked the instructor at the prep class and she said it was true but she didn't know which 7 chapters...it sure would be nice to get a head on all that reading.
Yes along with other medically inclined students, there were several LPN's at the prep class...so this is a little intimidating....but I have to ask myself why they didn't test out of 1st year? Isn't that what alot of LPN's do for the transition to RN?
Can you recall how intense the math test is? Pass or fail...this is a little scary.
Thanks for your help...

I'm sorry I don't keep my syllabus after the semester is over, I wish I could help you! As far as the math test goes I found it intense b/c I never took Algebra in HS, but if you have had it you'll probably be fine. The teachers will help you all they can, they want you to pass! They teach several formulas and you can use whichever one works best for you, but always show all your work, that saved my butt. That being said I got an 80% exactly on my first test, which is the minimum for passing, and like I said college is the first time I have ever done anything like Algebra. I use Ratio & Proportion for problems about oral meds and injections and Dimensional Analysis for IV drip rates. Just use your book and do all the problems you can find! Be prepared you will take a test each semester until you graduate, always Pass/Fail but it will get easier. With the LPN question I don't know why they would be with you guys for 1st semester we didn't have any...the LPN mobility has them take Pharmacology in a separate class in the Spring and in class with us for Med/Surg 1. They may have been with you guys b/c they only do the skills prep class once a year.
haha. yes.thats a little scary.
wait...does your name start with a "B"?
MissRN, we already are friends! Ha! Great minds think alike! You left early at the prep class...did you have to go to work? She stressed to really begin memorizing the equilvelents [sp] in our calculations book....look on the Roane State Momentum...one of the other students is going to re-type it and post it there...so watch for them...did you get your books online or buy the student package at the bookstore? I understand there is a cd in the packet from the bookstore that is suppose to be very helpful....unfortunately for me, I ordered all of my books online (saved tons of money though)...and a friend said the bookstore would not sell the cd separate....

We have had no surprise tests in my first year. We get a syllabus at the beginning of the semester and all the test dates are laid out for you and the chapters that test will cover are listed as well. You will have a med math test about 1/2 way through 1st semester in Pharmacology which they will teach you how to do and you will have a book to work from. It is pass/fail, you have to make 80% and you get one chance to take it, or yo have to drop out of Pharm and it puts you back a semester. You get to use calculators, but you will use theirs unless they approve the one you have. It needs to be a cheap one with the bare-bones keys. You will take a test like this every semester, but they will explain what will be on it and 2nd semester you take it in lab on the first day. But rest assured I have been told whenever I am expected to know something so I can prepare.
