RNs co-signing LPN transcription

Published

Has anybody in NJ heard of a Board of Nursing ruling that says that RNs must co-sign an LPNs transcription of medication? My job has just told us of this decision and all the LPNs are very upset over this. Especially since most of them have at least 20 yr. experience as nurses. I have checked the Board of nursing website and nothing of this is noted anywhere. please let me know. thanks DebiH

i've never heard of this. ..LPN's have a license to pass meds and shouldn't need a co-signer. that is just crazy.. just another stupid idea. maybe it's a facility thing? you should send a email to the BON and see what they say.

My old LTCF used to do this and then they did away with the RN co-signature about 4 years ago. Policy was also changed last year to be able to take a telephone order from a Nurse Practioner. I wouldn't want to sign my name to something that I didn't see/hear/do.

Why are the LPNs upset (rhetorical), the RNs should be upset (more work for them). I think it's rather amusing. Just like the IV thing, one facility has no problem with it, while another one believes the opposite. Like the previous poster experienced, this will probably be a temporary foolishness.

With most of my LPN co-workers I sign what they hand me without even thinking twice. They have more experience, knowledge and insight than I do at this point in my career. It just makes me feel bad that I have to do it when they are perfectly capable.

Just my two cents as a former LPN but I find it insulting, not amusing. Just one more example of how LPNs are good enough to do the job but not good enough to get the recognition or pay.
