RNC-OB....what book do I need??? Help!!

Published

Im planning on taking my certification soon and need to know which book I should dive into :) I want to pass this thing the first go-around!! I would just like a book with the info needed as well as practice questions that are similar to those on the exam. I have NO idea of what to expect......is it somewhat like boards?

Ive also heard that the questions are alot like the questions in the Perinatal Nursing book by Rice. Is this true?

Any advice!!!!! Thanks!!!!

Heather, Took my RNC in OB this AM and passed. The Perinatal Nursing book by Rice-Simpson helped alot. I read it and did the test questions in the back. I also had the CCPR practice tests that you can purchase. I had 2003,2007, and 2009. If there was a question I didn't know I read about it and kept retaking the tests until I go them all right. The questions on the RNC test are not necessarily the same but if you know the answers to all those you will be able to figure most of them out. There are also a number of strips to interpret so make sure that you know Chapter 8 pretty well......Good Luck

Thanks for ALL the info!!! I'm going to get those questions guides and focus on them. I went to the website for sample questions and couldn't find anything. I just want to pass :/ I took the advanved fetal monitoring class last month and they accidentally gave us the advanced....and I only missed 2, so I think I'm going to actually take that class this year toom.....thanks again and keep it comin!!!

Is there a link for the CCPR tests to purchase? I cant find them anywhere....

I'm testing Monday morning. I have the review book that was used in the 2 day class offered by Professional Education Center

http://www.proedcenter.com/cart/courses.php?view=course&course_id=86

Then I also have the CCPR practice tests

When I find weak areas I have been digging into the book and re-reading the area. Hope we both pass! Good luck!!!

Congratulations to those new RNCs!

Those aspiring should pass if they study AWHONN's Perinatal Nursing by Kathleen Rice Simpson and Patricia A. Creehan. Please be current with NICHDs new fetal monitoring guidelines and nomenclature.

Continued success

I just got home, and I passed! YAY! Best of luck to those of you studying..

:yeah: CONGRATS!

What do you feel was most helpful in your preparation that led to your success?

I used the book from the 2 day class by thr Pro Ed center (I didn't attend, but a co-worker did and let me borrow it). Also the CCPR tests. What I think really helped was not just memorizing the right answers, but taking the time to really understand the physiology behind the complications, different treatments, how the meds act, asking ?s to my co-workers, listening to the why's of things.

I had a pretty high number of ?s on epidurals, PIH, DIC, DM, twins, antepartum testing. I also had 3 cord gasses to interpret. I'm sure there are a bunch of different tests and a bunch of different ways to study, I'm just happy the way that I chose, worked out so well. I didn't think the exam was easy, but I felt prepared, and things I didn't know for sure I was able to deduce.

Again.. good luck out there!

I've been an OB nurse for 1 year. I know I have to have 2 years experience before I can take my exam for RNC. Any advice on when I should start studying?? I also noticed some of you posting about a 2-day class....is that similar to a Kaplan class or something to review you for the exam?

the link for ProEd Center is in my previous post. Apparently the instructor takes the exam herself as often as she can, then does a 2 day review. They have now added the option to test right after the 2 day review ( on location) which seems like a good idea. I wish I had done it right at 2 yrs experience, instead of waiting 7 :-) Good luck.

There's no way to study for the exam. It's a cumulative of all the knowledge you've acquired during your experience in practice. I didn't study and passed and I know nurses that studied for months and said it was a waste of time and had failed it!
