RN without SSN or work permit

Published

Hello,

I live in a state where I was able to get my RN license without SSN, so now I have it but I'm not able to do anything with it, and it seems that d/t retrogression, no hospital will be able to sponsor me. I was thinking, why not be a volunteer? I love helping others, so do you think that could be a possibility for me? can I use my RN license to volunteer since I'm not going to be paid. I'm also concerned with the hours that I'm suposse to fulfill every 5 years to be able to keep my RN, but how can I have work hours without being able to work? Also, can I maybe work independently as a contractor, could I lose my license if I do that? I don't want to do anything wrong but I want to use my skills, I'm also going to get my BSN to keep learning, is that a good idea for me, do you think that I would ever be able to work in this country with or without that? Please help me, I love being a nurse and when I started studying for RN I didn't know about retrogression, and I feel so sad that after all that I've been through to get the license now I won't be able to do anything at all.

Yes, you are right, there's no way I'm getting a SSN to work/volunteer in USA, at least not right now. However, I'm happy because I came here, learned English (of course still learning everyday), got my degree and now I will go back to my country (I think I'm a bit crazy for doing that, but the time has come, and I might come back in ten years with the right permits) there's a great need of bilingual RN's for private clinics over there. I will only need to take a test and start working. I never thought that I would be doing this, but I'm tired of being illegal when I have my own place with my own SSN :) Thanks everybody for your concern and kind advise!

Hugs to you for doing that. Please be aware that you may not need to wait the ten years provided that you leave the US before being picked up. You would be applying for Consular Processing as well.

Best of luck to you and please have a safe journey home.

How are you going to be allowed to work as a nurse at home? Is an ADN degree accepted in your home country? If it is, then that's great. At least you will be able to use the skills you learned. Good luck

A friend of mine passed her NCLEX and got her license from Vermont, she found a nursing home who said they will sponsor her in Illinois, she is legally staying in the US on a tourist visa. Is it possible for her to get a working permit by change in status? Is it legal to do volunteer work while waiting for her work permit and can the nursing home do this legally?

Sorry, but there are no visas available for her to remain in the US. There is no way that she can adjust her status to remain here. She is not going to be getting a visa that will permit her to work here legally, and she cannot volunteer without having a visa that will permit it.

Does not matter what any nursing home has told her, the issue is that the US government does not have any visas available. She is looking at more than five years before she will be able to get a green card for the US. Having a license does not give one permission to work here, a proper visa for that is required. The other major issue is that even to apply for the H1-B visa, that requires that one hold a license for the state where they would be working, and for Illinois, that is going to require that a CES be completed before Illinois will even look at her application and that takes about four months to get.

And one cannot remain in the US waiting for any type of visa if they I-485 cannot be submitted. Hope that she has a safe journey home, unless she wishes to be picked up for working here illegally.

Nursing homes do not issue visas, so they cannot promise anything to her. She also needs to have passed the English exams and have a Visa Screen Certificate if they were going to try to petition her for the H1-B visa, which would be hard for her to get. Again, they cannot even be submitted until next April for a start date of October, 2009. Chances are that she does not have significant work experience that would classify her as a specialist either, so that would not help her.

There is no way under any circumstance that she can remain here and work. Also that she would consider taking cuts in front of everyone that has been patiently waiting for a visa is also not something that sits right with me either. It is also illegal to come here on a tourist visa with the intent of staying and not returning home. It also makes it harder for others to even get tourist visas for the US when someone does this.

Actually this girl can work in the USA, if she got married to USA citizen, it does not matter whether she is here illegally or is out of status, she would be able to get a SS# and finally get a green card. The other way is have her family petition for her if they are american citizens, then she will get a green card though this takes a long time. Good luck!

That's true and it takes some time in order to get all that stuff going. Plus she would be watched for several years to make sure that the reason for the marriage isn't solely for a green card. I'm unsure regarding the out of status thing, but I thought you had to go back to your country of origin in order to go through the process for the K1 visa. If she's already married I don't think she can get her family to petition her, but if she's single then yes.

There is no such thing as an International nurse license. To work in Italy you need to meet the Italian nursing requirements and obtain a work permit
